BE IT REMEMBERED, that on the twenty second day of March, A. D. 1831, in the fifty fifth year of the Independence of the United States of America, CHRISTOPHER C. DEAN, of the said District, has deposited in this Office the Title of a Book, the right whereof he claims as Proprietor, in the words following, to wit

INTRODUCTION.

"For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers; shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart ?"-Job.

On the shores of Massachusetts Bay once lived the venerable Mr. Allerton. In early childhood he became pious, and amidst all the concerns of middle age, he maintained the character of a devoted servant of Christ. As he advanced in years, he grew in piety, till at the age of seventy-four he was generally known by the name of Father Allerton.

This appellation was given on pero'at of Es patriarchal character; but it was net nashtable in other respects. He had been the father of nime children, five of whom lived to the age of manhood, and were settled in the neighborhood
