13, GREAT MARLBOROUGH STREET.

MR. COLBURN'S NEW PUBLICATIONS.

I.

MR. BURKE'S

HISTORY OF THE LANDED GENTRY:

A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE WHOLE OF THE UNTITLED ARISTOCRACY OF ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, AND IRELAND. Complete in 2 vols. royal 8vo., beautifully printed in double columns, uniformly with the Peerage and Baronetage, price £2. 10s. bound.

This important national work has been undertaken as a companion to Mr. Burke's "Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage," and upon a similar plan, in order that the two publications may embrace the whole body of the British Peerage, Baronetage, and Gentry, and may furnish such a mass of authentic information, in regard to all the principal families in the kingdom, as has never before been brought together. It relates to the untitled families of rank, as the "Peerage and Baronetage" does to the titled, and forms, in fact, a peerage of the untitled aristocracy. It embraces the whole of the landed interest. The landed gentry of England are so closely connectedwith the stirring records of its eventful history, that some acquaintance with them is a matter of necessity with the legislator, the lawyer, the historical student, the speculator in politics, and the curious in topographical and antiquarian lore; and even the very spirit of ordinary curiosity will prompt to a desire to trace the origin and progress of those families whose influence pervades the towns and villages of our land. This work, abounding in interesting anecdote, and displaying deep research, must rank among the first class of those publications which elucidate, or connect themselves with, the annals of our country, and is indispensable to the library of every gentleman.

N.B.-Purchasers of single Parts or Volumes of this work are advised to complete their sets without delay, as the Parts and Volumes will only be sold separately for a short period.

THER

Now ready, 12mo. price 7s. 6d. cloth, uniform with Anthon's Horace, THE ENEID of VIRGIL, with copious English Notes. By CHARLES ANTHON, LL.D. Professor in Columbia College, New York, &c. Adapted for use in English Schools by the Rev. F. METCALFE, M.A. Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford.

*** In adapting it for English students, special consideration has been had to the mode adopted by the highest teachers to induce a thorough knowledge of the Author. When it is stated that the notes alone of the present edition occupy fifteen sheets, it will be generally considered that a sufficient number have been retained to afford the English scholar all the assistance and information requisite, without fostering supineness by affording too much assistance. The notes of this edition are placed separately after the text.

VIRGIL, WITH MARGINAL REFERENCES.

VI

Just published, fcp. 8vo. 7s. 6d. bound;

IRGIL'S ENEID,
BUCOLICS, and GEORGICS.
With Marginal References, and concise
Notes. Edited, from the Text of Wagner,
by Rev. J. PYCROFT, B.A. Trinity College,
Oxford.

Extract from the Editor's Preface to the
Marginal References.

"The advantage of marginal references to an edition of Virgil is too obvious for any lengthened argument. I need only allude to the pages of the most valued editions of the Holy Volume; to the well-known maxim"Every author his own interpreter'; and to the principle implied by Horace

'Segnius irritant animum demissa per aurem Quam quae sunt oculis subjecta fidelibus, et quae

Ipse sibi tradit spectator.'

Add to this the high importance attached to parallel passages, both as the means and test of scholarship, at our public schools and universities, as also that a marginal reference is the only kind of commentary not open to objection, as being crude, out of place, hard to remember, and harder still to digest; unsatisfactorily short, or tediously long; or, which is worse, as superseding the inquiry it ought to stimulate. Far from such evils, marginal references cultivate both the taste and judgment, and encourage habits of patient investigation and self-dependence. They place all scholars on even ground, by laying open to every one the sources of knowledge for his own supply, legitimate premises for his own inference, and original data for his own calculations."

LORDS STOWELL AND ELDON.

Just published, in 1 vol. 8vo. (uniform with the 1st and 2d Editions of Mr. Twiss's "Life of Lord Eldon"), price 5s. cloth,

A SKETCH

OF THE

LIVES OF LORDS STOWELL AND ELDON;

Comprising, with some additional matter, some Corrections of Mr. Twiss's Work on the Chancellor.

BY WILLIAM EDWARD SURTEES, D.C.L.
Barrister-at-Law.

"Mr. Surtees's title-page correctly indicates the nature of his work. His family connections have afforded him access to much interesting and curious information concerning the characters and domestic and public conduct of Lords Stowell and Eldon; and there is obvious throughout a most scrupulous and anxious attention to accuracy in his statements. He finds fault rather sharply with Mr. Twiss for having, in his first edition, omitted all allusion to the notorious Mr. Bowes, whom Mr. Surtees certainly shows to have been nevertheless indisputably the earliest patron of the young barrister, who afterwards became so great a chancellor, by affording him, very early in his career, a splendid opportunity for the exercise of his professional talents and acquirements. What may have been Mr. Twiss's object it is difficult to conceive. But it appears that, in his last edition, he recognises, though with some little apparent reluctance, the correctness of Mr. Surtees's statements, which he quotes; making use, also, of various other hints, by way of addition and correction, contained in the present publication, in its original shape of articles in one of the London Magazines. We recommend those who have purchased the valuable work of Mr. Twiss, to procure also the little volume now lying before us, which contains a number of curious and interesting circumstances in the private lives of Lords Eldon and Stowell, not mentioned in the work of Mr. Twiss, and also many letters and memoranda, very illustrative of their true characters."-NEWCASTLE JOUrnal.

"This is a very interesting accession to the public stock of information on a subject which will always command attention. The steps by which two of the most remarkable men of their own time attained the highest rank in their respective walks of the profession, cannot fail to excite the sympathising scrutiny of all who aspire-and who ever entered his name as a student of one of the inns of court without cherishing the secret hope of becoming, some day or other, a judge at the very least ?—to tread the path which Lord Stowell and the Earl of Eldon so successfully followed. No details can be too minute, provided they be sufficiently authenticated, which enable us to calculate the leverage required to surmount the earliest obstacles to advancement; and we, therefore, consider this publication of Mr. Surtees as a very valuable contribution to biography."-MORNING CHRONICLE.

"It is a kind of short supplementary volume to Mr. Twiss's Life, compiled in a fair spirit, and expressed in a pleasing style. The family of Mr. Surtees was in several ways connected with that of the Scotts; and he has been able, by additional anecdotes and letters, to bring out several characteristic traits of the two learned judges."-EXAMINER.

"This volume is a desirable addition to Mr. Twiss's work, a few erroneous points in which it corrects."-LITERARY GAZETTE.

"The frequent anecdotes and family reminiscences render the whole very amusing."

containing Reports of Prices and Proceedings in the different Markets on the Day of Publication. The Proprietors of the "DAILY NEWS" have resolved to comply with the wish of the Public; but, to prevent confusion, the paper will appear under a different name-that of THE EXPRESS. The EXPRESS will contain, in addition to the News in the Morning Paper, a Summary of the Home and Foreign Intelligence which may arrive on the day of publication. THE EXPRESs will have the advantage of Foreign Expresses, Correspondence, and other costly characteristics of a Morning Journal. the full and carefully prepared Reports of the Money, Railway, Produce, Corn, Cattle, and other Markets, will be the marking feature.

But

As, however, the interest in such a paper must necessarily be limited to a Class, or a Locality, the Proprietors cannot hope that either the sale or the advertisements will be so extensive or remunerative as those of a Morning Paper. They propose, therefore, that Threepence shall be the price of THE EXPRESS.

The Proprietors believe that every respectable News-agent will transmit the new Journal, on receiving a Post-office Order, at the rate of 19s. 6d. per Quarter; but should any difficulty arise, all persons desirous of being supplied with THE EXPRESS are requested to remit a Post-office Order for that amount, payable to Mr. Henry Wallbridge, 90, Fleet Street, London, who will transfer it to a respectable London Agent.

THE EXPRESS will be published every Afternoon, at Four o'clock, with the latest details of the Markets of the day.
