Away-away

Our holiday

Is far adown the river;
Beside the sea-

The fair-the free

The beautiful for ever!

Away, away, the sea of green-
Of silver, and of azure,
Expandeth widely like a scene

Spread purposely for pleasure;
Glad health and peace are on the coast,
Like splendour on the waters;
And on the sands a happy host
Of England's sons and daughters,
Away-away-

Our holiday

Is far adown the river;

Beside the sea

The fair-the free

The beautiful for ever!

Away, away, the wild and wood/

Are richly robed with glory; But looks for us the life-like flood

That leaps the headland hoary;

The golden corn along the plain,
Waveth with grace of motion;
But O the wonders of the main--
The morning on the ocean!
Away-away-

Our holiday

Is far adown the river;

Beside the sea

The fair-the free

The beautiful for ever!

Away-away;-0 rolling sea,

Great queen of song and story; Old England need not blush for thee, Nor thou for England's glory! The light of joy illumes thy coast, As morning gilds thy waters, And on thy bosom glides a host Of England's sons and daughters. Away-away

Our holiday

Is far adown the river;

Beside the sea

The fair-the free

The beautiful for ever!

10TH MARCH, 1863

ROYAL MARRIAGE RHYMES.

I.

FOR Albert Edward and his bride,
Joy sings aloud o'er hills and dells;
This is a day of welcome wide!
Denmark is won to Britain's side!-
Ring royal peals, ye wedding bells!

No burning bolt took light'ning leap!
Destruction shot no deadly shells!
Denmark's fair dove, from o'er the deep,
Love only won, and faith will keep !—
Ring peals of triumph, wedding bells!

II.

As morn disperseth dark throngs
Of gloomy clouds on high;
As March upsendeth lark songs,
To cheer the vernal sky;-

As richly glowing rays look

Upon the face of earth;

And wake for mount and mild nook,

The smiles of blooming mirth ;

[ocr errors][ocr errors]

So while the words of grace bind
The young and royal pair,-
May joy with them a place find,
And, where they are, be there!

III.

PRINCE and Princess, every steeple
Tells a tale of gladness true;
And the wishes of the people

Are for good-and good for you:
Glide,―amid the pleasant pealing
Of the merry marriage bells,-
Glides-through all the thrill of feeling,
That of loyal homage tells,—

Soft as breath of rich and wide bloom,
Glides this blessing in the gales,
Happiness to bride and bridegroom,-
God preserve the Prince of Wales!

IV.

Now the Queen's wide regions loyal,
Pray for blessings from above,
For the Bride and Bridegroom royal,
Hope, and peace, and joy, and love.
Hope, that brightly bloometh ever,
Whatsoever breezes blow;

Peace, that floweth like a river,
Never dry, and never low;
Joy, as fresh as beauty vernal,
Fairer for the flow of years;
Love, of life the charm supernal,-
Love that life with glory cheers!

V.

PUT work away! the marriage day,
Of Britain's royal heir,

Looks not for toil to till the soil,
Or cope with mill-bound care:
The sun of high rejoicing glows,
And gladsome is the day;
And cheerful music freely flows,
Like waters by the way.
This joyful chorus, far and wide,

Flows over hills and vales,"Blest be the Prince's royal Bride! Blest be the Prince of Wales!"

VI.

Sing, merry voices,

The song of the Wedding Day!

England rejoices,

And putteth her work away.
