GENERAL NOTE.-It should not be expected that the world's export and import totals for any year will agree. Among sources of disagreement are these: (1) Different periods of time covered in the "year" of the various countries; (2) imports received in year subsequent to year of export; (3) want of uniformity in classification of goods among countries; (4) different practises and varying degrees of failure in recording countries of origin and ultimate destination; (5) different practises of recording re-exported goods; (6) opposite methods of treating free ports; (7) clerical errors, which, it may be assumed, are not infrequent. The exports given are domestic exports and the imports given are imports for consumption, as far as it is feasible and consistent so to express the facts; no statement is for net exports or net imports. While there are some inevitable omissions from such a table as this, on the other hand, there are some duplications because of reshipments that do not appear as such in official reports.
