PAUL's Epiftles are arranged in the New Teftament, not according to the time, when they were written, but according to the fuppofed rank and importance of the communities, or perfons, to which they were addreffed. Hence the Epiftles, which were fent to whole bodies of Chriftians are placed before thofe, which were fent to individuals. Of the former, the Epiftle to the Romans has the firft rank, because Rome was the capital of the world: and the two Epiftles to the Corinthians come next in order, because Corinth was at the time, when St. Paul's Epiftles were arranged, the principal city of Greece. The Epiftle to the Galatians is placed in the third rank, because it was addreffed to a whole nation, which, though confidered as VOL. IV. A lefs 1 |
