with, and God and Christ be the all in all of angels, and the church's delight for ever and ever. God's persons, works, perfections and glory will be the matter of rejoicing and delight, praise and adoration in the countless ages of eternity. Reader, shall we be there? God grant that the person and work of Christ may have charms for us now, as that will be the best proof we shall see him as he is, and be with him for ever and ever.

How marvellous are thy works, O Lord!—
Let heav'n and earth the same record,

And fear thy holy name.

How just and true are all thy ways!-
Let all unite to sing thy praise,
And glory in thy fame.

We raise our songs to thy great name,
Thou Lamb of God, thou great I AM,
And bless thee for thy grace;
Lord God Almighty, Saviour, King,
We here our humble tribute bring,
And hope to see thy face.

Accept our praise while here on earth-
And when we yield our mortal breath,
And soar to worlds above;

O then we'll praise in highest strain,
Thy great, eternal, matchless name,
And bless redeeming love.

REFLECTION CCLXXIV.-SEPTEMBER 30.

"Having obtained eternal redemption for us."- Heb. ix. 12.

VERY emphatic and glorious words these; and seem very suitable to follow our yesterday morning's reflection, inasmuch as the great work of all works was not much dwelt upon for no doubt this will be the grand work of celebration in the glory world; and there, in all probability, it will be better seen how all other works have been made to subserve this, namely,

:

the Saviour's obtainment of eternal redemption. This is great and marvellous indeed. It is so in the great moving cause of it,-the love of God; hence we read, "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son." Again, "God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." And again, "Herein is love,—not that we loved God, but that God loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins," This is love-love inconceivable, love great, love glorious, love immeasureable, love unquenchable, love free, love ever-abiding, love that could not be turned away from the objects loved by all their sin, iniquity, untowardness, and rebellion. Well might John say, "God is love." Secondly, Marvellous and wonderful in the meritorious cause, manner of performance, and the person who performs-namely, God the Son, becoming the Son of God, and taking upon himself a merely created nature-a nature that once did not exist-an inferior nature-though a perfectly sinless nature, and rendered impeccable, and so not liable to stain or contamination, by virtue of its union to the divine nature; and constituting one marvellous, mysterious, wonderful person; in whom dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily-not in parts, but bodily-in whole, complete; as in the Father, and in the Holy Ghost-and in whom meet, and centre, and abide all the perfections and capabilities of sinless humanity. For this wonderful person a body is prepared. He assumes it in its infantile state. But how, none can explain nor is it needful they should; it is a matter for faith, and not for explanation. In this incarnate state be appears first a babe, then a youth, then a man; perhaps to show that from these three different degrees or stages of existence, he means to gather the objects of his love by the redemption he is about to achieve. Moreover, the precise manner of performing is wonderful; for Christ does nothing in the great matter of salvation by proxy. He does all in person. He obeys in his own person-he suffers in his own person-he dies in his own person: for him there

was no substitute. He gave himself. He was independent of all. He bore our sins in his own body on the tree. At the institution of the ordinance, his words are very emphatic : "This is my body-this is my blood." This he freely and heartily gave. He gave himself for the church. He redeemed it by his own blood. The price of the church's redemption was the person the wonderful, marvellous person of Christ. He sacrificed himself! What wonderful words! Great and marvellous is this thy work of positive, absolute, certain and eternal redemption. An eternal Person effecting eternal redemption,-a redemption from merrited, endless woe. Thirdly, Great and marvellous in the things secured thereby. Eternal love devises and purposes an eternal redemption, and all things necessary to make the redeemed holy, happy, blessed and glorious; and put beyond a possibility of ever becoming involved or enthralled again. Hence all things appertaining to redemption are of an eternal duration. The people redeemed and pardoned, are so for ever; are justified for ever—are loved and delighted in for ever; they are to possess the land, the heaven, the home, the glory for ever. He hath obtained eternal redemption, - he hath done that by which they are to be released from all the consequences of sin and misery for ever and ever; and that through which they shall possess all the joys, and pleasures, and delight of a holy, blessed, and sinless inheritance, called the purchased possession-the better country-the many mansions—the place prepared-an inheritance, incorruptible, and that fadeth not away, raised up in heaven. To this, through the redemption of our Lord Jesus, the saints, the purchase of Christ's blood, will have an abundant entrance; to the praise and the glory of the riches of his grace, wherein he hath made them accepted in the beloved; in whom and by whom they have redemption eternal. .

How glorious is the Son of God,
Who ransomed sinners by his blood;
Who did indeed his bliss forego,
To save his church from endless woe.

He left the glory-world above,
Where all was holiness and love;
Came down to earth, sighed human breath,
And died an ignominious death.

Thus he obtained eternal life,
And saved from everlasting strife-
His church, the people of his care,
That they might his full glory share.

O gracious Christ, the Christ of God,
How precious thy atoning blood;
Through this our sins are all forgiv'n,
And we created heirs of heav'n.

END OF VOL. III.

BRISCOE, Printer, Banner Street, Finsbury.

NOTE.

THE author of the foregoing begs to inform his friends that the Fourth Volume is now ready for the press; and he trusts it will be ready for their reading by January next. He is also happy and thankful to say he has heard of several instances where the work has, as far as it is completed, been found soothing and comforting in the hour of sickness and approaching dissolution. May God yet speed its usefulness more abundantly, and the author will regard it a sufficient compensation for the toil and time it has cost him.

The present Volume is much extended in matter beyond the two former, and cannot therefore be sold for less than 28., bound. May be had in sheets for 18. 6d. The Fourth Volume, which will be the last, will contain an index of all the Scriptures upon which the Reflections are made; and will also be 2s.

N.B.-The first three months' issue are all sold; but as soon as convenient there will be a re-issue. Each Volume is complete in itself, containing three months' Daily Reflections and Songs. The next, therefore, will contain October, November, and December.

Some quotations from Reviews will be given in next issue,
