which I say ;" and again, Ye call me Master and Lord, and ye say well, for so I am"."

Q. Was this name ever united with his higher titles ?

[ocr errors]

A. Frequently. He is said to be "Lord of the Sabbath." "Lord of all." "Lord over all." "Lord both of the dead and the living," "The Lord of glory." "The Lord from heaven.' The only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords." St. Peter baptized in the name of the Lord; and the charge given to St. Paul was, "Be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord "."

Q. Was not God the Father often called by the same name?

A. Yes. Jacob said, "Then shall the Lord be my God." Moses said unto the Lord, "O my Lord, I am not eloquent," "and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses." "The Lord is a jealous God." "The Lord he is God.” "The Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords." "Trust ye in the Lord for ever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength."

QIs the term Lord ever used as a translation of the Hebrew word Jehovah, or, the selfexistent God: that name which the Jews, after the captivity, held in such veneration and awe, as seldom or never to pronounce, unless on the most solemn occasions: that name which Josephus calls the "shuddering name of God," and which is elsewhere termed, mysterious, ineffable, unknown?

A. The term Lord is so used in our Bibles, in almost every page of the Old Testament'.

Q. Is the term Lord applicable to Christ in the most exalted sense?

A. Isaiah says, "Sanctify the Lord of Hosts, (Jehovah Sabaoth), and he shall be for a sanc tuary: but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel "." Commenting on which passage, Bishop Lowth observes, "This text hath a plain aspect upon Christ. See Romans ix. 33; 1 Peter ii. 84" Turning to that chapter of the Romans, we find it written, 66 They (the Israelites) stumbled at that stumbling-stone; as it is written, Behold I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone, and a rock of offence." Thus in St. Peter it is written,

"Wherefore also it is contained in Scripture, Behold I lay in Sion a chief corner-stone, elect, precious, and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you, therefore, which believe he is precious. But unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence." Both these passages evidently refer to Isaiah, in the passage above quoted, and in chap. xxviii. 16. Here then we have St. Paul and St. Peter applying to Christ expressions of Isaiah, which refer to Jehovah; and they wrote under the guidance of the Holy Spirit: therefore we have the highest authority for inferring, that Christ is the same with Jehovah. And the expressions of Isaiah refer to God as "the Lord God, the Lord of Hosts;" therefore they refer to Christ in the same, i. e. the most exalted sense i

Thus again in Hosea it is written, "I (Jehovah) will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God (Jehovah Elohim.)" Here our Almighty Father declares that he will save the house of Judah, by means of Jehovah, "the Lord their God."

1 Vide Jones of Nayland. Catholic Doctrine, chap. iv. § 2. * Hosea i. 7.

But in the Acts of the Apostles, we read that salvation cometh by Jesus Christ alone; " for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved!." Therefore Jesus Christ, and Jehovah the Lord our God, are the same person.

Again, Jeremiah has this famous prophecy, "Behold the days come, saith the Lord (Jehovah), that I will raise unto David a righteous branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name, whereby he shall be called, the Lord (Jehovah) our righteousness".' It is universally allowed by Christians, that Jeremiah here describes Christ and his kingdom. Christ therefore is called by Jeremiah the Lord-Jehovah, by which title he had previously described his heavenly Father. Other passages might be adduced to the same effect: Isaiah xl. 3. 10; Zechariah ii. 10, 11; x. 12; Joel ii. 32; Malachi iii. 1.

Hence we conclude that the name Jehovah, or Lord, that name which denotes the essence of God, as self-existent, and the Author of exist→ ence to all things else, was applied to Christ the Messiah, without limitation or distinction ".

God being applied to Christ the Lord, in this exalted sense?

"The

A. Yes. It is written in the Psalms, Lord (Jehovah) said unto my Lord (Adoni), sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool." In this passage we know that the Lord (Adoni) is Christ, for Christ himself hath declared it": and the words are quoted by St. Peter, and applied by St. Paul'. But the same title, Adoni, or Adonai, denotes God the Father in more than an hundred places in the Old Testament, shadowing forth his authority and dominion. There can be no doubt here as to the exalted sense in which the word Lord (Adoni) is used when spoken of Christ; for of whom but an immortal Being could it be said by God the Father, "Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool"."
