THE essays and sketches of which this volume is composed are taken, as the name implies, from "The Critic." In the conviction that some, if not all of them, are, despite their brevity, of permanent literary value, it has been deemed well to reproduce them in a form more durable than that of a fortnightly review. This step is rendered doubly advisable by the fact that some of the earlier numbers of "The Critic" are already out of print. CONTENTS. PAGE I. THOREAU'S WILDNESS. John Burroughs Edward VI.
