Ar the request of my friend, Mrs. Rainsford, who is a member of my congregation, I gladly preface a new edition of one of the valuable works of her late husband with a few words of personal testimony. It would be as unbecoming as it is unnecessary for a younger man to write even a word of "introduction" to such a father in Israel, and one so well known as the late Mr. Rainsford. What I would wish to do is to pay a little tribute of gratitude to his memory. I have personal reasons for great thankfulness to God for Mr. Rainsford's teaching. In the early days of my Christian life I was much helped and strengthened by his clear, solid, and scriptural presentation of Christian truth; and from the time I first read one of his books, I learnt to look out for anything that came from his pen. Mr. Rainsford was truly remarkable for his firm grasp of essential evangelical doctrine, and for his peculiarly strong hold on the great foundation realities connected with the believer's standing in Christ. It is well known that he was greatly valued by Mr. Moody for his clear-cut definitions of doctrine, and for his lucid and convincing statements of |
