Harry was silent. The seriousness of his mother's manner, and the earnest expression of her countenance, impressed him with sensations of awe, which he was not accustomed to feel in her presence; but when he saw her wonted smile of affection beaming upon him, his eyes suddenly filled with tears. Unable either to conceal, or rightly to express the mixture of emotions by which he was agitated, he took Mrs. Beaufoy's hand, and pressed it to his lips.

"Oh, my love," said she, "you are yet but a child. If it please God to spare you to become a man, you will pass through many temptations, and fall into many and dreadful sins, if not preserved from them by his grace. Remember then what I

now tell you, that if you are spared from such a calamity, it must be by earnest prayer for the influence of his spirit. If you rely on your own strength to keep you from evil, you must fall. That compassionate Saviour, who died an ignominious death to obtain the pardon of your sins, will also afford you the means of sanctification, if you supplicate for it with earnestness and sincerity."
