And peering through the deep wood's maze

And could not go in peace away
Without the minister; -
I begged him, for dear Christ his sake,
But O! — my heart was fit to break, -
Mother he would not stir.
“So, though my tears were blinding me,
I ran back fast as fast could be,
To come again to you ;
And here — close by – this squire I met,
Who asked (so mild !) what made me fret;
And when I told him true,

“‘I will go with you, child,’ he said,

In Christ renewed, regenerate, –
Of God’s most blest decree,
That not a single soul should die
Who turns repentant with the cry,
“Be merciful to me !”
He spoke of trouble, pain, and toil,
Endured but for a little while
In patience, faith, and love, –
Sure, in God’s own good time, to be
Exchanged for an etermity
Of happiness above.
Then, as the spirit ebbed away,
He raised his hands and eyes, to pray
That peaceful it might pass;
And then — the orphans' sobs alone
Were heard, as they knelt every one
Close round on the green grass.
Such was the sight their wondering eyes
Beheld, in heart-struck, mute surprise,
Who reined their coursers back,
Just as they found the long astray,
Who, in the heat of chase that day,
Had wandered from their track.
Back each man reined his pawing steed,
And lighted down, as if agreed,
In silence at his side ;
And there, uncovered all, they stood; —
It was a wholesome sight, and good,
That day for mortal pride.
For of the noblest of the land
Was that deep-hushed, bareheaded band ;
And central in the ring,
By that dead pauper on the ground,
Her ragged orphans clinging round,
Knelt their anointed king.”
WE are as clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly — yet soon
Night closes round, and they are lost for ever;
Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings
Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
One mood or modulation like the last.
We rest, — a dream has power to poison sleep ;
We rise, one wandering thought pollutes the day
We feel, conceive, or reason, laugh or weep,
Embrace fond woe, or cast our cares away;
It is the same ! — for, be it joy or sorrow,
The path of its departure still is free ;
Man's yesterday may ne'er be like his morrow ;
Naught may endure but Mutability.
