The voice at midnight came,
He started up to hear,

A mortal arrow pierced his frame,
He fell-but felt no fear.

2 Tranquil amidst alarms,

It found him on the field;
A veteran slumbering on his arms
Beneath his red cross shield.
His sword was in his hand,

Still warm with recent fight,
Ready that moment at command,
Through rock and steel to smite.

3 It was a two-edged blade,

Of heavenly temper keen;
And double were the wounds it made,
Where'er it glanced between.
'Twas death to sin-'twas life
To all who mourned for sin;
It kindled and it silenced strife,
Made war and peace within.

4 Oft with its fiery force

His arm had quelled the foe;
And laid resistless in his course,
The alien armies low.
Bent on such glorious toils,

The world to him was loss;
Yet all his trophies, all his spoils,
He hung upon the Cross.

5 At midnight came the cry,

To meet thy God prepare;

He woke and caught his Captain's eye;
Then strong in faith and prayer,

His spirit with a bound,

Left its encumbering clay;

His tent at sunrise on the ground,

A darkened ruin lay.

6 The pains of death are past,
Labor and sorrow cease;

And life's long warfare closed at last,
His soul is found in peace.
Soldier of Christ, well done!
Praise be thy new employ;
And while eternal ages run,
Rest in thy Saviour's joy.

MONTGOMERY.

XII. RESURRECTION.

EASTER.

274.

WAKE, our drowsy souls,

AWAKE,

And burst the slothful band;

The wonders of this day

Our noblest songs demand.
Auspicious morn, thy blissful rays
Bright seraphs hail in songs of praise.
2 At thy approaching dawn,
Reluctant death resigned
The glorious Prince of life,

II. 4.

In dark domains confined. Th' angelic host around Him bends, And midst their shouts the God ascends.

3 All hail, triumphant Lord!

Heaven with hosannas rings, While earth in humbler strains. Thy praise responsive sings. Worthy art Thou who once was slain, Through endless years to live and reign.

4 Gird on, great God, Thy sword,

Ascend Thy conquering car, While justice, truth, and love,

Maintain the glorious war.

Victorious Thou Thy foes shalt tread,
And sin and hell in triumph lead.

SCOTT.

275.

HAIL the day that sees Him rise

Glorious to His native skies!

Christ awhile to mortals given,
Enters now the gates of heaven.

III. 1.

2 There the glorious triumph waits:
Lift your heads, eternal gates!
Christ hath vanquished death and sin;
Take the King of glory in.

3 See the heaven its Lord receives!
Yet He loves the earth He leaves:
Though returning to His throne,
Still He calls mankind His own.

4 Still for us He intercedes,

His prevailing death He pleads;
Near Himself prepares our place,
Great forerunner of our race.

5 What though parted from our sight,
Far above yon starry height;
Thither our affections rise,
Following Him beyond the skies.

MADAN.

L. M.

WHEN God is nigh my faith is strong,
His arm is my almighty prop:
Be glad, my heart; rejoice, my tongue;
My dying flesh shall rest in hope.

2 Though in the dust I lay my head,

Yet, gracious God, Thou wilt not leave

My soul forever with the dead,

Nor lose Thy children in the grave.

3 My flesh shall Thy first call obey,
Shake off the dust, and rise on high;
Then shalt Thou lead the wondrous way
Up to Thy throne above the sky.

4 There streams of endless pleasure flow;
And full discov'ries of thy grace
(Which we but tasted here below)
Spread heavenly joys through all the
place.

277.

Hasted at the early dawn;

III. 1.

Spice she brought, and sweet perfume,
But the Lord she loved had gone.
2 For awhile she lingering stood,

Filled with sorrow and surprise;
Trembling, while a crystal flood
Issued from her weeping eyes.

3 But her sorrows quickly fled

When she heard His welcome voice,
Christ had risen from the dead,
Now He bids her heart rejoice.

4 What a change His word can make,
Turning darkness into day!

Ye who weep for Jesus' sake,
He will wipe your tears away.

278.

Sehovah's will be done;
TAND th' omnipotent decree,

Nature's end we wait to see,
And hear her final groan.
