Of this writer the Quarterly Reviewers observe Ritson cannot be named without respect for his industry, and pity for the unfortunate irritability which placed him throughout his life in a state of bitter and unintermitted warfare-with beef-steaks and revebest friends and half the letters in the alphalation;- Pinkerton and Snorro;—with his

bet.

But although his outrages may provoke a smile, he has ably pointed out the weaker parts of the Arabian and Gothic systems, as Mr. Dunlop (in the History of Fiction) calls them, of Percy and Warton.'

It is said that Ritson, at the latter period of his life, bought up and destroyed many copies. An able vindication of Warton, written by the Rev. Thomas Russell, appeared in the Gentleman's Magazine for Dec. 1782, under the signature of A. S.

Fabularum Romanensium Bibliotheca: a general Catalogue of old Romances, French, Italian, Spanish and English, in two Volumes. A specimen of a work to be published under the above title was printed in 1782. 12mo.
