The Widow of the Wood. London, 1755. 12mo. pp. iii. & 208. Founded on a real occurrence. The following memoranda may serve as a key to this extraordinary production:-The maiden name of the heroine was Ann Northey; her first husband, John Whitby, Esq., of Great Honeywood, Staffordshire; her second, Sir William Wolseley, of Wolseley Hall, in the same county; her third husband was John Robins, Esq. M. P. for Stafford, and who died abroad in 1754. The Rev. Corne, who was engaged in this affair, died broken-hearted at Tixall. Her fourth husband was Mr. Hargrave, an attorney, father to the late Mr. Hargrave, whose law-collections were purchased for the British Museum; and who, during his life, did all that lay in his power to prevent the dissemination of the scandal attached to his mother's character, by buying up and destroying every copy of this work that he could procure.
