These volumes contain abridgments of those proceedings by inquest which chiefly originate in a writ, the purpose of which is to establish a claim by inheritance. By that writ a jury is to inquire in what lands the ancestor of the claimant died vested, and their annual value; if the claimant be the nearest heir to the deceased in those lands; if he be then of age; of whom, as feudal superior, the lands were held, and by what tenure; in whose possession they now are; on what account and for what time they have been so possessed. The period embraced by these records extends from the middle of the sixteenth to the end of the seventeenth century.
