PROPOSALS

FOR PUBLISHING

VIEWS IN JERSEY:

INTENDED AS A

SCENOGRAPHICAL SUPPLEMENT

TO THE

ACCOUNT OF THE ISLAND OF JERSEY,
BY W. PLEES.

The Account of Jersey by Mr. Plees has lately been pub. lished, containing four highly finished Engravings, by Mr. G. Cooke, viz, A distant View of ELIZABETH CASTLE and the TOWN of ST. HELIER, A near View of ELIZABETH CASTLE, A distant View of MONTORGUEIL CASTLE, and The Entrance of a Cave in GREVE DE LANCHON, at PLEMONT; togethe with a large and elegant MAP, from a recent Survey, engraved by Mr. Neale; Price, in Quarto, with Proof Impressions of the Plates, £1: 15; and in Octavo, £1 : 1.

The intended object of publication was, to produce a series of original designs drawn expressly for the proposed work, comprising picturesque and romantic prospects in Jersey, together with near views of several public buildings, both an cient and modern; all in highly finished engravings: and to tender the plates still more interesting, they, were to be ac. companied with appropriate descriptions; and a copious introduction was also to be prefixed. Such was the intention. but in the course of collecting materials for this purpose, they accumulated so much beyond the author's expectation, and hereceived so many valuable communications from different

friends, that he was induced to extend his plan, and attempt a more enlarged undertaking. In conformity with this alteration, he now proposes to publish another work, so distinct from the former, that each will be complete in itself, and yet be so connected that they may mutually refer to each other.

The publication of the proposed subsequent work will depend on the reception which the present volume may receive from the public. Should the author's assiduity in this attempt be successful, it is intended that the Views, (which are already drawn,) and their several descriptions, shall be pub. lished by subscription. They will then constitute a scenographical and topographical supplement; and having the same type and dimensions, may be bound up with the present work; but as the engraving of twenty-eight views, and a number of vignettes, must necessarily involve a considerable expense, the author cannot venture to incur the risk, without public encouragement: this encouragement he hopes to receive, that he may be enabled to continue and complete his plan.

"PREFACE.

It is proposed to publish the Supplement by Subscription; to consist of seven numbers, cach number to contain four. Plates besides one or more Vignettes, with suitable Descrip tions in Letter Press; a number to appear every two months; price in quarto, 10s. each number; or, in octavo, 68.
