as his ever-present God, able now as then to support and control all things by His Almighty arm. Turning then to trace the interminable races of Living Beings the Archaic Earth unfolds to view, all having flourished and acted in turn their allotted parts on the world's wide stage, he has his own proud imaginings of an exclusive occupancy and an exclusive Divine care laid low, and he is brought to feel the due level of his own single race amongst the many and mighty masses of terrestrial existences. But in the midst of this properly-induced lowliness-brought home by the overwhelming contact of other Beingshis spirit is justly elevated, by the exalting contrast of his own superior privileges on the Earth, over all the ancient races of living creatures, standing there as he does the noblest of God's works, capable even of bearing his Maker's Image, in prelude to a participation in His Glory. And cheered moreover he further may be, when glancing into all the long and mighty evolutions of the Antique World, he sees them all prospectively arranged for his own present beneficial use, manifesting that there is, ruling over all, a Providing God ready for all his necessities. And then, although overwhelmed he may be by the long receding epochs of time the immeasurable eras of the Archaic Earth lay open to view, yet in those long durations he catches a shadow which gives some conception to his mind of that awful Eternity which is the essence of the August Deity, and is indeed the

enduring destiny to which his own indestructible spirit is taught to aspire. And lastly, while he sees ever succeeding change and transformation stamped as the actuating principle throughout the Earth's Antique History, he with renovated faith, feels in the very mutability of the condition of himself and all things around him, how thus he is indissolubly linked with that all-continuous system of decay and restoration which the Great Governor of all eras and all existences is ever evolving for the universal good.

Thus tracing the mysteries of his destiny through all the revealed wonders of the receded past, and all the shadowed-out visions of the coming future, Man finds the living present richly filled with motives for adoration, for thankfulness, for submissive service. He remains, while all is in movement and transition around him, a Being of exalted faith and lofty anticipation. The Earth's Antiquity nobly supports his confidence in a glowing futurity, and prompts his actual footsteps to an elevated course of action; and thus, amidst the World's vicissitudes and Life's most fearful troubles, he is firm, he is undismayed, and may ever, while journeying trustfully

"On earth's sepulchral clod,
The darkening universe defy
To quench his immortality,

Or shake his trust in God."
