THERE's not a bird with lonely nest Each barren crag, each desert rude, Holds Thee within its solitude; And Thou dost bless the wand'rer there, Who makes his solitary prayer. In busy mart and crowded street, Thou, Lord, art near, our souls to bless And every moment still shall bring Widely they spread through earth and sky, Through all creation let thy Name And we, where'er our lot is cast, XXI. WAIT! O my soul, thy Maker's will; D He in the thickest darkness dwells, Performs His work,-the cause conceals! But though His methods are unknown, Judgment and truth support His throne. Wait! then, my soul, submissive wait, XXII. IN every object here I see Something, O Lord, that leads to Thee: In every object here I see Something, my heart, that points at thee: Hard as the rocks that bound the strand, Deep and deceitful as the ocean, And, like the tides, in constant motion. XXIII. THERE is a safe and secret place Reserved for all the heirs of O be that refuge mine! grace; The least and feeblest there may bide Uninjured and unawed; While thousands fall on every side, He rests secure in God. The angels watch him on his way, He feeds in pastures large and fair, A hand almighty to defend, An honoured life, a peaceful end, XXIV. OH! God unseen, but not unknown, Throughout this universe of space Parents I had, but where are they? Now I am one amidst the crowd Of lite and action hurrying round; Now left alone-for like a cloud They came, they went, and are not found. Even from myself sometimes I part, Yet surely by my bed thou art, To prompt my pulse, inspire my breath. |
