Go, hearken to the billow's bound,
Behold the light'ning's awful glare-
Creation trembles at the sound;—
For know, the hand of God is there!

Go, view when cloudless evenings rise,
How numberless those orbs of light
That fill the vast unmeasured skies,

And beam sweet comfort through the night.

Go, search earth's hollow caverns deep,
Explore the hidden treasures there:
The sepulchres where millions sleep,
Until the Judge of heaven appear.

Go, seek the valleys, deck'd with green,
Thy Maker's living works behold!
There man enjoys a life-serene,

And shuns the rich, and scorns their gold.

Go, view the mountain-peak of hoar,
Where human footstep ne'er hath trod;
Where birds of prey, and eagles soar :-
Then praise thine Omnipresent God!

THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

"And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one Shepherd."

ST. JOHN. X. 16.

THE Shepherd's seen

In pastures green,
Near pleasant stream,
He watches there his sheep;
And 'tis his care-

While with them there

From every snare

His little flock to keep!

When nights are cold,

Within his fold,

He pens the old,

To shield them safe from harm;

And 'tis his care,

In safety there

The lambs to bear,

Upon his bosom warm.

Ere Summer fades,
In silent glades-

'Neath hawthorn shades

He guards them while they sleep: And 'tis his care,

The wolf to scare,

And from each snare

Protect, his chosen sheep.

So in thy word

We read, oh! Lord,
Thou wilt afford

Us help, when troubles roll;
Then need we fear,

If thou art near,

Our way to cheer?

Thou Shepherd of the soul!

When frown the skies

When billows rise

The seaman cries

To THEE, to still the wind;
Though storms appear,

If thou art near

What need he fear?

Thou Shepherd of mankind!

Should terrors fall,

Thy children all

THE SOUL'S IMMORTALITY.

Shall hear thy call;
And in the hope rejoice;

That thou wilt keep,

When life shall sleep

Then all thy sheep

Shall know their Shepherd's voice!

THE SOUL'S IMMORTALITY.

"For this corruption must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."-1 COR. XV. 53.

Or what art thou, O Soul? awake, and tell
A trembling sinner on the brink of death;
Say, where, when life expires, art thou to dwell,
Or dost thou die, when fails this mortal breath?
Art thou to moulder in the darksome grave,
And canker there, to feed the worms of earth;
Art thou to shrink from being like the wave?
Not for that end, thy Maker gave thee birth:
No-thou, my soul, must live,-live long and share
Eternal happiness-eternal joy—

Or everlasting woe, in torments, where

Foul fiends of hell, their mighty powers employ,
To rack the wicked! O then quick prepare
To seek, my soul, thy Lord's redeeming love;

Who all thy load of guilt, didst freely bear,
That thou mightst dwell in perfect bliss above:
That thou mightst live eternal-never die—
For thou wert formed for Immortality!

DEVOTION.

WHEN at the throne of God we bend,
Lo! what a glorious sight appears;
Our prayers through ev'ry cloud ascend,
Far from this sorrowing land of tears,
Up to the realms of Heav'nly bliss,

Where reigns our great immortal head,
Who owns our mourning souls are His,
Bought by his blood, on Calv'ry shed!

He points us to those realms of light,

Where dwell his own in robes divine;
Whose songs, ten thousand smiles invite

From Him, in whom all glories shine.
O then, awake! each slumb'ring pow'r,
And tune the praise of saints above;
Arise my soul and bless the hour,
When first thou sang the song of love.
