Then watch, time flies! a very little space

Is mark'd this side the tomb,-then life shall fleeThe spirit, fraught with hope, shall leave its place, With trembling joy, to seek Eternity!

HAGAR AND ISHMAEL.

GENESIS XXI. 9-21.

EARTH hath no light to comfort thee,
Thou sorrowful and weeping one;
Nature no more shines free,
Beneath the glorious sun :
The wilderness lies 'round,

Sterile and waste its breast;

That lonely dove hath not yet found

Her cheering, unforgotten nest.

No breezes wing the mountain by,

No cooling palm-tree waves its head;

Far, far the scorching sky,

On every side is spread-
Hark! heard I not thy pray'r,
That to thine offspring's eye:
Calm slumber might be given there,
And thou not near, to see him die?

Stay, fainting one, thy Saviour takes
Compassion on thy lonely state;
From yonder rock there breaks
A draught, which thou may'st take:
Go, wake the sleeping boy,
Death doth not bind his brow;

He shall be yet thy spirit's joy,
And kings and nations round him bow!

How oft the sun, with genial rays,
Illumes the wanderer's rugged way!

So HE-of ancient days !—
Did thus His love display:

Oh! soon his gracious word
Gave comfort to her heart;
Hagar believed it was her Lord,
And bade her trembling fears depart.

HYMN.

THE INVITATION.

COME bow with reverential awe,

Around Jehovah's throne;

Nor dread the sound of Sinai's law,
The Saviour can atone-

Hark! how he calls us home

"Oh! come, ye children, come !"

Come, every kindred friend we love,
And yield no more to fear,
Rich blessings flowing from above,
Have long been waiting near:

In glory there is room!

Come, dear companions come!

Grace soon shall crown each trembling heart,

With light and joy divine;

So Jordan's swell shall all depart,

And beams of love shall shine,

To bid our spirits come

Oh! come, rejoicing, come!

Ten thousand saints enthroned on high,

Hail that triumphant morn; When Christ array'd in majesty, Shall every soul adorn,

And call us to our home;

ΤΟ THE MEMORY OF

MARTHA,

THE LAMENTED WIFE OF MR. WILLIAM GOWER, OF MAIDSTONE.

GONE to her rest! in that world of light,
Like the star at dawn of day;

That folds its trembling pinions bright,
When fades the dreary shades of night,

And softly melts away.

But then, amidst dark clouds, arise

The sun's warm beams to gild the skies;
So she-inwrapt in sweet surprise-

Flew to her rest!

Gone to her rest! where the sufferer's tears
Dim not the smiles of heaven :-

Where joys and peace are changed for fears,
And the spirit on its vesture wears,

The seal of sins forgiven!

Then why in sorrow weep we still?
JESUS his promise did fulfil-
She is, by His Almighty will,

Gone to her rest!

Gone to her rest! from the mournful lot,

And wilderness she trod :

Husband and child are with her not

Save one-but pain is all forgot,

And may not mar that blessed spot,-
The presence of her God!

Oh! when shall we so freely roam;
When will his mercy bid us come,
In such an everlasting home,

With her to rest?

THE MIRACULOUS DRAUGHT OF FISHES.

ST. LUKE V. 1-11.

FAR through the regions 'round, fame spread the word,
The word of God! And multitudes drew near;
Eager to share the heavenly treasured hoard-
The gladsome tidings of salvation hear—
From Him-blest messenger!-sent from the Lord,
And in his robes of righteousness appear :—
They sought the Son of God! who bade the land rejoice,
And welcomed to their souls, Salvation's voice.
