THE INFANT'S PRAYER.

FATHER of Mercies! Heavenly Lord! Good are thy works and wond'rous ways, Thou, who by angels art adored,

Accept an infant's prayer and praise.

Lord guide me through this world of sin,
Assist me with thy heavenly grace;

Here watch my path, then lead me in
To heaven, thy sacred dwelling place.

Father in glory! Thee, I owe

More than this helpless tongue can say ;

Not all my life while here below,

Could for one blessing, thee repay.

Saviour above! who died for me,

Stoop down with thy redeeming love; From sin, mine infant heart, set free, That I may sing thy praise above.

God of all truth! O teach, and fill
My heart, to speak thy power divine—

Help me to love Thee, better still;
And all the glory, Lord, be thine!

D

ON TIME.

"For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow."-JOB VIII. 9.

TIME flies, time flies! and mark how short the road, To yon pure sphere of long unceasing day :

Brief is the passage to that bright abode,
Where seraph forms their loud hosannas pay.

Time flies, time flies! nor lingers to forewarn,
Weak, guilty man, of his lost ruined state;
But onward hastes to bring that awful morn,
When souls shall hear their everlasting fate.

Time flies! O what is this poor mortal life,
To one blest hour amidst the realms above?
Where nought is known of earthly care or strife,
Where swells the choir that sing Redeeming Love!

Then mount, my soul, from this vain-thinking globe,
Fly to the clime, which never change can know—
Put on humility's angelic robe,

And triumph o'er the grasp of death and woe!

How short is life! upspringing like a flow'r—
Blooms-is cut down-before the noon of day;
Or if in mercy spared another hour,
It pines in grief, and withers in decay.
