SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC STANDARDS OF LIVING 6978 Mie BY THERESA S. McMAHON, PH.D. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Wahr 2-3-26 12758 PREFACE This book is the outgrowth of a course of classroom lectures on the subject of Standards of Living. The interest of the students in the social aspect of the subject suggested the present historical and analytical interpretation of present-day standards of living. Many helpful suggestions were made by friends who read the manuscript. I wish to acknowledge my appreciation of the assistance given me by my colleagues, Professor Howard B. Woolston, Professor Allan R. Benham, and Professor William D. Moriarity of the University of Washington; and by Professor William F. Ogburn of Columbia University. My early indebtedness to my former instructors in the University of Wisconsin, Professor Richard T. Ely and Professor Edward A. Ross, has been increased manyfold. Their encouragement and faith helped to keep me at my task. To them must be credited a large part of whatever virtue the book possesses. Its faults are mine alone. My thanks are due to those who have courteously permitted me to make brief extracts from copyrighted material. THERESA S. MCMAHON |
