ENGAGED during a long and honourable lifetime in the prosecution of that industry which has rendered the Clyde so famed, and as one of the most prominent agents employed in extending the bounds of British enterprise and commerce in various parts of the world, the name of Mr. Denny is associated with the most excellent workmanship, the fairest dealing, and the most considerate and liberal remuneration of those who represent his interests. In these respects, however, the Clyde, as well as other parts of the kingdom, can boast of not a few merchant princes whose enterprise, integrity, and liberality are also very distinguished; and if the praise of an anonymous writer, and an obscure person, should be deemed of any value, it is here bestowed rather in respect of those works of public and private benevolence for the unostentatious performance of which Mr. Denny and his partners deserve the gratitude of the living and the respect of posterity.
