TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE.

THERE is no need of apology for introducing to the English reader one of the works of so accomplished a divine as Professor Steinmeyer, whose learning and subtlety of mind have placed him in a high position among the theologians of Germany.

Dr. Steinmeyer is principally known by his Beiträge zum Schriftverständniss, a work which shows him to be an able expounder of Scripture, and worthy of being a preacher to the University of Berlin, a position he held for many years in addition to his professorship, but which he has lately resigned on account of the claims of his chair. He ranks highly as an exegete, as may be inferred from the present work, which will be found a contribution to exegesis as much as to apologetics; and in order that it may be more available for the former purpose, a list of the passages of Scripture elucidated is appended.

With regard to the style, it might be presumed, from the author being a fervid orator, that the sentences would flow in well-rounded periods.' This is, however, not the case, as Dr. Steinmeyer's strength lies principally in the power he possesses of evoking thought in his hearers or readers.
