In 1893 there were 240 national building and loan associations in the United States, with total assets of $37,020,366. Since that date this class of associations has greatly decreased in numbers, On Jan. 1, 1906, they were approximately sixty in number, with estimated assets of $20,000,000.

Production of Coal. AREA OF THE WORLD'S COAL-FIELDS, IN SQUARE MILES. China and Japan, 200,000; United States, 194, 000; India, 35,000; Russia, 27.000; Great Britain, 9,000; Germany, 3,600; France, 1,800; Belgium, Spain, and other countries, 1,400. Total, 471,800.

The coal-fields of China, Japan, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, and India contain apparently 303,000,000,000 tons, which is enough for 450 years at present rate of consumption. If to the above be added the coal-fields in the United States, Canada, and other countries, the supply will be found ample for 1,000 years. Improved machinery has greatly increased the yield per miuer, and thus produced a fall in price to the advantage of all industries.

The production of the principal countries in 1905 in metric tons of 2,205 pounds was: United States, 352,694,110; United Kingdom, 239,888,928; Germany.
