HOWEVER unequal the Dispensation S E R M. of Providence, upon a careless and XI. transient View, may seem to be; yet, upon a more close and accurate Survey, we mail find a greater Equality therein than we were aware of. Thus, for Instance, the Men in whose Composition Fire and Spirit are the predominant Ingredients, have generally much nobler Designs, and are capable of greater Attainments, than those of a phlegmatic and more dispassionate Make. But then the same Life and Energy, which pushes on the former to undertake generous and heroic Actions, often precipitates them into fatal Excesses. If they are more than the common Run of Men in some Respects; Providence, to humble them and reduce them to a Level Q4 with with their Fellow-Creatures, has left them in Danger of being less than Men in others. When they do well, No-body better; and when ill, Nobody worse. Whereas the Men of cooler and more Saturnine Constitutions resemble the colder Countries; which, though they are not productive of those generous Fruits and rich Metals that ennoble the hotter Climates, are yet free from several noxious and baneful Animals wherewith the other abound. The Affections in These are gentle Ferments working in the Breast, which hin- der it from settling into Inactivity, but do not transport it into Exorbitances and in- temperate Heats. They can more easily observe the Apostle's Precept, Be ye angryx and fin not. Since the Scripture every-where not only condemns the grosser Acts of Vice, but forbids the least Approach or Tendency to it; the Apostle's Meaning cannot be this: "Indulge yourselves in Anger, provided "you sin not."
