THE ANTI-LIBRARY,

fitted up with mahogany, and containing the most valuable and extensive private collection of ancient and modern Prints, Maps, and Topography in Europe. Over the chimney of white marble is a glass, under which stands a Parisian Clock, with two figures of Biscuit China from the manufactory of Sevres. From the centre of the ceiling hangs a splendid Lamp, in Or Molu. Round the room runs a gallery of ornamented iron work. Opposite to the door is a large Pier Glass, under which stands a large inlaid Commode, containing, within brass-wire doors, the Correspondence of the Hon. Horace Walpole, illustrated in twenty-six magnificent volumes of atlas folio size. In the centre of the room is a Cedar Library Table, with an inlaid slab. The curtains of this room are of blue cloth richly trimmed with yellow lace, and surmounted by draperies of yellow cloth, also richly fringed with the same.

The next room is the

BREAKFAST AND SMALL DINING PARLOUR,

hung with blue damask, and furnished entirely with the finest old Buhl.-At one end is a splendid

Commode, ten feet high, composed of Buhl, tortoise-shell, and lapis lazuli. In this room are five tables also of Buhl, and a splendid Commode of the same, containing three compartments, surmounted by a slab of Verd de Mer marble, under a pier glass, on which is a beautiful Basket of Chinese carving in ivory, brought over by Captain Maxwell, who conveyed Lord Amherst from his embassy to China in the Alceste frigate. The frigate was wrecked, and this fragile piece of carving was amongst the few things saved. On one of the tables stands a Casket of raised Japan: on the other is a beautiful Coffer, elaborately carved in ivory, and inlaid with ivory, ebony, and mother-of-pearl between them stands a Commode of rich Buhl, on four legs, surmounted by some pieces of fine old china. On the third table is a bronze groupe of Perseus killing Medusa; on the fourth a Tea Caddy of japan; and on the fifth is a small glazed Commode of rich Buhl, containing a collection of small articles in gold and silver filigree, enriched with jewels, &c.

[Amongst the rarities in this cabinet, are a Necklace and Ear-rings of garnet and gold, discovered by Richard Marquess of Chandos, in a stone coffin containing a female skeleton, near Rome, A. D. 1817. It is remarkable that the garnet which forms the drop of the necklace is carved with the Gorgon's head used always by

the Romans as the symbol of death. The reason for the affixing this symbol to burying places and tombs has never been satisfactorily explained by Antiquarians, although the fact has been repeatedly noticed: but we believe that this is the first instance in which it has been found in jewellery, attached to the remains of the human body.]

On this commode stands a beautiful antique Salt-Cellar, of gold, in the shape of an altar, surmounted by a small figure of Neptune standing on a globe of blood stone, supported by four figures of sea horses. On one side of the altar is the bust, in bold relief, of the Emperor Vespasian; on the other, that of the Empress Flavia : on the third side is an enamel of Cupid resting on a Globe in the middle of the ocean; on the fourth side is another enamel, containing a group of figures, and the date of 1540 upon a tablet. The whole workmanship is exquisitely beautiful. The Pictures are as follow:

THE DUTCHESS'S DRESSING ROOM.

A magnificent Toilet, with a service of silver filigree gilt plate stands under the glass, the frame of which is also of silver gilt. On two marble brackets are small inlaid Ivory Cabinets. On each side of the toilet stands a splendid Japan China Jar. Opposite the toilet is a Clock of Or Molu, inlaid in Marqueterie, ten feet high, which originally belonged to the palace of Versailles. On each side is a richly gilt table, on both of which are beautiful Dejeunés of old

Dresden China. Beyond them again, and in the two corners of the room, are two splendid Cabinets inlaid most richly in Marqueterie, surmounted by candelabra, and some rich pieces of Worcester china. The Chimney-piece is of Italian sculpture, of white and variegated marble: upon it are two splendid Vases, painted in shells, of Worcester porcelain, some smaller pieces of the same, and a most elaborate sculpture, in ivory, representing The Rape of the Sabines, superbly mounted in silver gilt, as a Tankard, with a cover of the saine. On a table, inlaid in Marqueterie, stands a rare and beautiful Nautilus Shell, richly mounted in silver gilt, boldly chased and engraved, surmounted by Neptune on a Dolphin, enriched with Jewels. This splendid ornament stands on a circular Ivory Plinth, most elaborately chased in rilievo, by Benvenuto Cellini: the base and top are of Or Molu. On the same table are two other Nautilus Shells, beautifully mounted in silver gilt. Opposite the chimney are two gilt Tripods supporting two magnificent Vases of Worcester porcelain, bear

In the centre is a rich Library Table, adorned with Or Molu, and inlaid with motherof-pearl, and Marqueterie, on which stands an Inkstand of Or Molu, and two Candelabra of Or Molu and mother-of-pearl. Two Ladies' Work Tables of Or Molu and Marqueterie, with marble slabs, surmounted by pieces of
