While the author of the following pages has had for many years a strong bias for the study of history, and a great partiality for antiquarian researches, he has at the same time been deeply impressed with the paramount importance of scriptural truth. This disposition led him to turn his attention to the religious condition of ancient Britain, and now induces him to present to the public the result of his labours. Many of the works which have come under his notice contain much important information; but he has not found any single volume which, in his judgment, was calculated to afford a just and complete view of the religion of our country in ancient times.

Numerous writers on this subject have been satisfied with a very brief and meagre notice of important events; while others, in detailing the peculiarities of the different religious systems which have successively prevailed, have evinced an almost entire disregard of the great principles of divine truth, or have spoken of religion as entirely identified with the political and external condition of the church as a corporate body. When correct views have been entertained on this point, they have mostly been buried in large and expensive works.
