The West at last has a magazine it may be proud of.- Chicago Daily Sun.
Interesting and readable literary matter.- Christian Herald, Detroit, Mich.
A magazine of high literary merit. East St. Louis, Ill., American Catholic.

Fine specimens of magazine work are the articles.- St. Louis Jewish Voice.
Analytical in the character of its contributions. Los Angeles, Cal., Times.

The last number contains a portrait of George Eliot and is filled up with interesting reading matter.- Detroit Free Press.

The November, '91-January '95 number contains a handsome portrait of Gladstone and several interesting articles.- Boston Courier.

Consists of 42 pages printed on fine calender paper and contains many very interesting articles. We wish it success.- St. Louis Daily Reporter.

A high-class periodical. It takes position with the The Forum, the North American Review and The Arena. It is inferior to them only in size, and is an honor to the West, -St. Louis News.

No. 5 contains two thoughtful articles on George Eliot, but we cannot but feel that "Geo. Eliot as a Woman" is too unsympathetic to be just, although it is suggestive.New Unity, Chicago.

A splendid number (the fifth) of this most entertaining, valuable and scholarly quarterly. The frontispiece is a fine engraving of George Eliot, concerning whom there are two remarkable articles. Other subjects are "Athens," "True Courage," and "Dr. Johnson."— Sunday Sun, Kansas City.

The aim of THE HESPERIAN seems to be to revive an interest in the classical and standard authors among general readers. Very refreshing is the editor's slashing up of the literature of the present day most in vogue among those who consider themselves" cultured." Church News, St. Louis.

The fifth number is chiefly devoted to estimates of George Eliot, both as a writer and as a woman. In "Dr. Johnson Again," there is much interesting information about this great writer. The notable fact about this magazine is that it is published at St. Louis, a quarter in which we do not look for a literary periodical.- Boston Herald.

The May-July number is chiefly devoted to the study of George Eliot as a writer and as a woman. Her extremely homely portrait figures as a frontispiece. Special essays are devoted to the subject of her life and works. "Dr. Johnson Again" is the title of an entertaining and discursive paper by the writer of the articles on the same subject in the last number of the magazine which attracted so much favorable comment. Charleston, S. C., News and Courier.

We welcome with pleasure THE HESPERIAN, by the Hon. A. N. De Menil, formerly editor of the St. Louis Magazine. If talent, culture and fine literary taste count for anything, then we can safely bespeak for THE HESPERIAN, a periodical whose pages will glow with thoughts replete with ideas clear-cut and expressive, with statements condensed and lucid, with sentences pregnant with practical truths. Should its success be measured by its merit (which we doubt not) then may we fully expect that this Western luminary will stand forth in bold outline and conspicuous radiance in the literary firmament, adding luster to age, and brilliancy to luster.- St. Louis Magazine.

The March HESPERIAN is a very attractive number of this purely literary periodical. and one that will interest the lover of literature. There is an article on Dr. Samuel Johnson, the man, the lexicographer, and the poet, that puts that interesting character before the reader in a style as entertaining as the details of Burwell's Bura. An appreciatively critical consideration of the Great Cham's style is appended to the sketch of the old bear, and it contains some very acute and clever judgments upon the merits and demerits of that polysyllabic style. Other features are "Life in Stageland," "A Literary Chapter," and " Vercingetorix." All are done in a free and fine style. THE HESPERIAN reflects credit on St. Louis, and deserves the attention of the public.- Sunday Mirror, St. Louis.
