IN England and Wales alone there are more decidedly insane persons, the annual cost of whose maintenance exceeds If to this we add the loss of productive labour, the cost of main taining families thus rendered destitute, the suicidal and criminal acts resulting from insanity, the misery, anxiety, and destruction of domestic happiness which even its minor forms occasion, a mass of suffering will be presented perhaps unequalled by any other source of human aflliction. And there is, probably, not a single family in this kingdom which has not, at some period within the memory of its present members, experienced the universality of this evil.
