Irish Church would hand over to the Church of Rome all those parts of Ireland in which the Protestants are now a small and scattered minority; and would make her dominion more complete and unquestioned. The establishment of her power in Ireland would dissimilate and disunite Ireland from England, producing deeper disunion and more bitter dissension than any which could arise from her occupying a less influential position; and the resistance of her influence by the Irish Church is the great hope for the harmonious progress of the United Kingdom. The Irish Church confronts the Church of Rome with that spirit of liberty which has made England great, and which must be the spirit of Ireland's greatness too. She is the herald of that universal freedom which shall animate Ireland when it becomes a united nation. Her position in the country corresponds to the inevitable influence in Ireland of English civilization; and the maintenance of that position is necessary for the concord of civil and religious influences, without which a nation's life cannot be Christian. She is the ark of Ireland's civil welfare and of Ireland's Christian faith; and if she be subverted, Ireland will be overwhelmed by the destructive power of either

Romanism or atheism.
