MOURNERS FOR THE DEAD CLAIM OUR FRIENDLY SYMPATHY AND COUNTENANCE.

And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.—Genesis 1. 1-3.

And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept : and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son !—2 Samuel xviii. 33.

His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.-2 Chronicles xxxv. 24, 25.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men ; and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.-Ecclesiastes vii. 2-4.

In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.-Matthew ii. 18.

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.-Luke vii. 12, 13.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept.-John xi. 33-35.

MOURNERS, SPIRITUAL-HOW THEY MAY BE Comforted. ENCOURAGING PROMISES TO THEM.

For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.— Psalm xxx. 5.

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.Psalm cxvi. 3, 4.

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.--Isaiah lvii. 15, 16.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.— Isaiah lxi. 3.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.— Zechariah xii. 10.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.— Matthew v. 4.

A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.John xvi. 21, 22.

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.-Romans vii. 24, 25.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.— Revelation xxi. 4.

"MY," AN EXPRESSION OF IMPORTANCE IN RELATION TO GOD'S OWN PECULIAR CLAIMS. A SELECTION.

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord : and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.-Exodus vi. 2, 3.

Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them.-Leviticus xxvi. 2, 3.

Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.-Psalm ii. 6, 7.

I am the Lord: that is my name and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.-Isaiah xlii. 8.

I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; even every one that is called by my name : for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.-Isaiah xliii. 6, 7.

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.-Isaiah xlvi. 10.

Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?-Isaiah lxvi. 1.

The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces ?-Jeremiah xxiii. 28, 29.

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them : and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.-Matthew xvii. 5.

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh : and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.-Acts ii. 17, 18.

BELIEVER'S PECULIAR CLAIMS.

THE GRASP OF FAITH.

The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.—Exodus xv. 2.

And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock; in him will I trust he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.-2 Samuel xxii. 2, 3.

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.—Job xix. 25.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.-Psalm xxiii. 1.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?— Psalm xxvii. I.

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth : but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.Psalm lxxiii. 24-26.

What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us? My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand. His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.—Song of Solomon v. 9, 10, 16.

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.-Isaiah xii. 2.

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.-Luke i. 46, 47.

And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.-John xx. 28, 29.

Names, Titles, and Offices of Jesus Christ—A SELECTION ALL RICH IN MEANING AND FULL OF INSTRUCTION.

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.-Genesis iii. 15.

The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.-Genesis xlix. 10.

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.-Exodus iii. 14.

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh : there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.-Numbers xxiv. 17.

The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.-Deuteronomy xviii. 15.

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.-Psalm xlv. 6, 7.

The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.-Psalm cx. 4.

I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.-Song of Solomon ii. I.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. -Isaiah vii. 14.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.-Isaiah ix. 6.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. Isaiah xi. 1, 2.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste.-Isa. xxviii. 16.
