HE Pupil having in the preceding Books of the Series been made fully acquainted with the rules generally given for the Pronunciation of our Language, has now arrived at that stage in his progress where scope is required for the application of these rules, and where, by the perusal of interesting and instructive Stories, &c., he may be made to acquire a facility in the Art of Reading, which, with the directions given, it is hoped will be both of an elegant and intelligent character.

The Extracts which have been selected for this purpose, and of which this the Fourth Book-is composed, are all specially adapted to the capacities of those for whom they are intended, and are of such a nature as to inculcate high moral principle, and otherwise tend to the religious and intellectual improvement of the young.

The Exercises on Terminations begun in Book Third have been here fully given in detail, and completed in the First and Second Sections. The compiler would strongly recommend particular attention to these exercises, as by a thorough understanding of them, where they respectively occur, much time and labour may afterwards be saved to both teacher and pupil, and much inaccurate reading also prevented.

Section Fourth has been devoted to Extracts in Verse, which will be found well adapted for Recitation by Junior Pupils.

The Introductory columns and Recapitulation Lessons will be found useful as Exercises for Spelling. In consideration of which, no additional exercises have been given.
