PREFACE.

N first announcing the defign of a Bibliographical Cyclopædia, the compiler was under the impreffion that one volume would comprehend both an alphabet of Authors, with an account of their works, and a fyftematic arrangement of Subjects, with references to the best authors who have written on them. As the alphabet of Authors proceeded, it became obvious that an entire volume would be requifite for the authors and their works alone. This has been accomplished in the volume published in 1854; not without the neceffity, even in that enlarged form, of leaving out much that might advantageously have been added, and which might reasonably have been expected, but for the neceffity of limiting the work to certain bounds. In commencing the publication of the Subjects, the extent to which the work ought to be carried in order to its defign being fatisfactorily carried out, became ftill more apparent, and therefore the compiler determined to bring it out in divifions, each divifion forming a volume complete in itself, fo that the purchaser might have a complete book, without being under the neceffity to take more than one, if inconvenient.

The result of that determination is the present publication, which confequently has been carried through the prefs with lefs fear of its exceeding the prescribed bounds. It is therefore hoped that no confiderable omiffions will be found in the treatment of the important fubjects which it embraces.

The great aim in this volume is to point out the authors who have written in illuftration of any or all of the books, chapters, and verses of THE HOLY SCRIPTURES. It is limited to no fect; the contributions of all denominations will be found here referred to. It is limited to no nation; English, French, Italian, German, and other nations are, in a greater or lefs degree, here reprefented; nor is it limited to any time, authors from the earlieft to the latest period are here ranged under each head in chronological order.

As it is contemplated that books in the whole range of human knowledge may be
