MASSENBURG.

A TALE.

IN THREE VOLUMES.

Is not the life of woman all bound up
In her affections? What hath she to do
In this bleak world alone? It may be well
For man on his triumphal course to move,
Uncumber'd by soft bonds; but we were born
For love and grief.

MASSENBURG.

CHAPTER I.

The serpent of the field, by art
And spells, is won from harming;
But that which coils around the heart,
Oh! who hath power of charming?

It will not list to wisdom's lore,
Nor music's voice can lure it;
But there it stings for evermore
The soul that must endure it.

LORD BYRON.
