Ar a Meeting of the DIALECTIC SOCIETY, held this

evening, the following resolution was unanimously adopted :—

Resolved, That the thanks of the Society be presented to the HON. B. F. BUTLER, for his eloquent and appropriate Address, and that a copy be requested for publication.

In communicating to you the above resolution, we are performing a duty not the less gratifying, as we feel assured that you will favour us with your compliance.

We have the honour to be your obedient servants,

I have had the honour to receive your note of yesterday, and in compliance with the request of your society, will immediately prepare my address for publication. As it was written with much haste, I shall wish to enlarge a little the remarks on one or two of the topics, and to make such other corrections as may occur to me as desirable in revising it for the press; after which it will give me pleasure to place it at your disposal.

ADDRESS.

GENTLEMEN OF THE DIALECTIC SOCIETY,

WHEN I received, a few weeks since, the invitation which brings me before you, the pressing and laborious occupations in which I was employed, and which have ever since continued, would have induced me to decline almost any other application of the like nature; but my sense of the honour you had done me, in selecting me, to introduce a series of addresses to be annually delivered before your society, and my desire to co-operate in your endeavours to foster a literary taste among the members of this Institution, enforced by an apprehension that you might not, in the brief period allowed you, be able to supply my place, overcame all objections, and led to the engagement I am now about to fulfil.

* The Dialectic Society of the Military Academy has been in existence several years; but this is the first address of the kind delivered before it.
