PREFACE.

THERE has been no attempt to set forth here all the principles of electricity, nor to make this book take the place of engineers. There is a small amount of electrical knowledge that is helpful to the three classes addressed, and this has been presented in the way that seemed simplest and in the order that seemed most natural. Much space has been given to the National Code of Rules for Electric Wiring because these rules furnish the standard in America for safe electrical construction. As a help to thorough comprehension it has been thought well to give the reason for each rule and to explain, with both text and illustrations, the meaning of all technical terms and phrases that are used. The contents of the book have appeared during the last two years in a series of articles in "The American Architect and Building News."
