St. John, xvi. 8-11.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of

judged

VOICES FROM THE UNSEEN WORLD.
St. Luke, xvi. 19-31.
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine
linen, and fared sumptuously every day: and there was a certain
beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich
man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And
it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the
angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was
buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and
seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried
and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus,
that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my
tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said,
Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good
things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is com-
forted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us

and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would
pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that
would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore,
father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: for I
have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also
come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, they
have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he
said, nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the
dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, if they hear not
Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though
one rose from the dead

UNION-WITH-CHRIST, OUR LIFE AND POWER.
Colossians, iii. 1-6.
For ye are
When Christ,
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affec-
tion on things above, not on things on the earth.
dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him
in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the
earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil con-
cupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry for which
things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of dis-
obedience

SERMON XII.
THE TRANSFIGURATION ON THE MOUNT.
St. Luke, ix. 28-31.
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took
Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered,
and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there
talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: who
appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should
accomplish at Jerusalem
133
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: Behold now, thy
servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified
thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life;
and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me,
and I die

Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, rejoice.
Let your mode-
ration be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be
careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplica-
tion with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto
God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.....

GOD'S FIELD.
205
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath
no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend
money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that
which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that
which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. In-
cline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live;
and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David..
