From this remarkable Inftance, 'tis well worth obferving by the way, that when the Apostles are fuppofed to argue with the Jews ad Hominem, the Meaning is, that Arguments alledged by the Apostles to the Jews in particular, differ from Arguments brought to the Gentiles, in This; not that they were at any time Arguments drawn from things acknowledged

ledged by the Jews, and in themselves otherwife in conclafive; but that they were drawn, justly and Strongly, from things well known among the Jews, though what the Gentiles were Strangers to.

The Correfpondencies of Types and Antitypes, though they are not themselves proper Proofs of the Truth of a doctrine, yet they may be very reasonable Confirmations of the Foreknowledge of God; of the uniform View of Providence under different Difpenfations; of the Analogy, Harmony, and Agreement between the old Teftament and the New. The words in the Law, concerning one particular kind of death ; (1) Deut. (1) He that is hanged, is accurfed of God; can hardly be conceived to have been put in upon any other account, than with a View and Forefight to the application made of it by (2) St Paul. ly things, the (4) Figures for the time then present, (4) Heb. 9, the (5) patterns of things in the heavens, and (6) (5) Heb.9, The Heavenly Things Themselves; cannot, without the force of ftrong Prejudice, be conceived to have (6) Heb. 9, happened by Mere Chance, without Any Forefight 2. or Design. There are no fuch Analogies, much lefs fuch Series of Analogies, found in the Books of mere enthufiaftick Writers, much less of enthusiastick Writers living in fuch remote Ages from each other. 'Tis much more credible, and reafonable to fuppofe, (what St Paul affirms,) that (7) these things (7) 1 Cor. were Our examples; and that, in the uniform courfe 10, 6. of God's Government of the world, (8) all these (8) ver. 11 things happened unto Them of old for [rózo] enfamples, and they are written for Our admonition, upon whom the Ends of the World are come. And hence arifes that Aptnefs of Similitude, in the application of feveral Legal Performances to the Morality of the Gospel; that it can very hardly be fuppofed, not to have been originally intended. As, (1) Know ye not that a little (1) i Cori Leaven leaveneth the whole Lamp? Purge out there- 5; 6, 7, 8. fore the Old Leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Chrift our Passover is facrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the Feaft, not with old Leaven, neither with the Leaven of Malice and Wickedness, but with the unleavened Bread of Sincerity and Truth. Again; (2) WE are (2) Phil. 3. Some Applications of Texts out of the Old Teftament, are mere Allufions. That is; Nothing more is intended to be affirmed, than that the words fpoken in the old Teftament are as Truly and as Juftly applicable to the prefent occafion, as they were to That upon which they were originally fpoken. Of this kind, I think, is That of St Matthew; (2) Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the Prophet, faying; In Rama was there a Voice heard, lamentation and weeping and great Mourning, Rachel weeping for her Children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. (1) 2 Cor. likewife St Paul: (1) I mean not that other Men be 8; 13, 14, cafed, and you burdened: But by an an Equality; AS it is written, He that had gathered much, had nothing over; and he that had gathered little, had no (2) If.6.9. lack Again: What (2) Ifaiah fays of the Jews, (fuppofing he did not fpeak there prophetically, though the Solemnity of the Introduction makes it much more reasonable to believe he did: But fuppofing he spake of the Jews in his own time,) Go and tell this People, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and fee ye indeed, but perceive not: make the heart of this People fat, and make their Ears heavy, and fout their Eyes; leaft they fee with their Eyes, and hear with their Ears, and understand with their (3) Matt. Heart, and convert and be healed: was (3) fulfilled, was verified, was equally true, equally applicable to the Jews, in our Saviour's days. Of the fame kind (4) Matt. feems to be (4) St Matthew's Application of that Paffage in (5) Isaiah; Surely he hath born our Griefs, (5) lf. 53, and carried our Sorrows. The fenfe of the words

Chrift was once offered, to bear th. Sins of Many. 28. Yet St Matthew fays; (3) He healed all that were (3) Matt. Sick That it might be fulfilled which was spoken 8; 16, 17. by Efaias the Prophet, faying; Himself took our infirmities, and bare our Sickneffes. His Meaning is: Chrift healed Difeafes in fuch a manner, that even in That fenfe alfo, the words of Isaiah were literally verified. To give but One Inftance more. (4) All these things (faith the Evangelift) Spake (4) Matt. Jefus unto the multitude in Parables; might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, faying, I will open my mouth in Parables, I will utter things which have been kept fecret from the Foundation of the World: That is, the words (5) (5) Pf. 78, of the Pfalmift were as properly, as truy, and as 2. justly applicable to the things which our Lord (poke, as to the occafion upon which they were originally fpoken by the Pfalmift.
