FOR THE TROUBLED IN MIND.

Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour (Isa. xlv. 15).

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Prov. xviii. 14).

Our friend is now disposed to say, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord; remembering mine affliction, and my misery, the wormwood and the gall (Lam. iii. 18).

-I am afflicted, and ready to die, while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted (Ps. lxxxviii. 15).

-Trouble and anguish make me afraid; they prevail against me as a king ready to the battle (Job xv. 24).

Do thou bring him out of this horrible pit, and out of this miry clay; set his feet upon a rock, and establish all his goings (Ps. xl. 2).

Make him to hear joy and gladness; so that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice (Ps. li. 8).

FOR SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF GOD.

All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, to such as keep his covenant and his testimonies (Ps. xxv. 10).

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore let us not despise the chastening of the Almighty: for he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole (Job v. 17).

Let us neither despise the chastening of the

Lord, nor faint when we are rebuked of him: for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If we

endure chastening, God dealeth with us as with sons: for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if we be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are we bastards and not sons (Heb. xii. 5).

Let us remember, that we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world (1 Cor. xi. 32).

Enable our friend to say with Job, Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil also? (Job ii. 10).

Yea, though he slay me, yet will I trust. in him (Job xiii. 15).

-The Lord gave; and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the Lord (Job i. 21).

Help our afflicted friend to say, with David, I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it (Ps. xxxix. 9).

-with Isaiah, I will wait upon the Lord that hideth his face, for blessed are they that wait for him (Isa. viii. 17).

-with Micah, I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him (Mic. vii. 9).

May we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt us in due time. (1 Pet. v. 6).

May we remember for our comfort, that they who suffer according to the will of God, may

commit the keeping of their souls to him in well-doing, as unto a faithful Creator (1 Peter iv. 19).

FOR THE DYING.

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not (Job xiv 1).

Our afflicted friend is now saying in effect, The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain, but especially forgive all my sins (Ps. xxv. 17).

I am weary with my groaning; all the night I make my bed for to swim: I water my couch with my tears (Ps. vi. 6).

-My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread: by reason of the voice of my groaning, my bones cleave to my skin (Ps. cii. 4).

-I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am like an owl of the desert: I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house-top (Ps. cii. 6). -Like a crane or a swallow, so do I chatter; I mourn like a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward : O Lord, I am oppressed: undertake for me (Isa. xxxviii. 14).

Lord, enable him truly to say, I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God (Job xix. 25).

-I know, that if my earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, I have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens (2 Cor. v. 1).

-I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him against that day (2 Tim. i. 12).

-I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate me from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. viii. 3S).

-I loathe life; I would not live alway; yet, all the days of my appointed time will I wait, until my change come (Job vii. 16).

O Lord, bring home that precious promise to his soul, Fear not; for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee (Isa. xliii. 1).

-Fear not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee: yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness (Isa. xli. 10).

-Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth and was dead: and, behold, I

am alive forevermore; and have the keys of hell and of death (Rev. i. 17).

Lord, help him inwardly to reply, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me (Ps. xxiii 4).

-Now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation (Luke ii. 29).

-Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth (Ps. xxxi. 5).

Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace (Ps. xxxvii. 37).

Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his (Num. xxiii. 10).

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; for they shall rest from their labours; and their works do follow them (Rev. xiv. 13).
