SOME painful events which have happened in the last few years have made many ask if there is no more satisfactory law for English Christians than that which is provided for them by a Parliament which does not pretend to be Christian. Hence the significance of Canon TREVOR's demand, in the last Church Congress, for the restoration of the study of the CANON LAW in the Universities. It is hoped, therefore, that the present attempt to introduce this study amongst us by adapting a standard foreign treatise may be of use in two ways:

1. In preparing the way for a more complete and authoritative treatise. Many English clergymen have read deeply in this subject, but the writer is not aware that any of them has published the results of his study for the common benefit.

2. In providing a Manual for the use of candidates
