THIS little work has been prepared in accordance with the Second Resolution defining the objects of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-namely, that the duty of humanity to animals ought to be systematically inculcated in our schools: and especially in the schools devoted to the training of children whose home-influence is the least likely to counteract that tendency to cruelty which arises from ignorance and thoughtlessness. These simple lessons are therefore intended to help the teacher to give such regular and systematic instruction on the nature of our most familiar animals, and of our consequent duties towards them, as shall make a lasting impression.
