Indiana was discovered by La Salle în 1671 and constituted part of New France. In 1763 France ceded the country to Great Britain and by terms of the treaty of 1783 it became part of the United States under the general term of the Northwest territory. Indiana was admitted to the Union in 1816, and the state government finally was settled in Indianapolis in 1825. The state is divided into 92 counties and 1,016 townships. The General Assembly consists of a Senate of 50 members elected for four years and a House of Representatives of 100 members elected for two years. Sessions are held biennially. The state is represented in Congress by two Senators and 12 Representatives. The voters in the state take their politics seriously and are intensely interested in the activities of the Democratic and Republican parties. The state has contributed presidents and vice presidents and political overturns are not unusual, especially in Presidential election years.

The City of Dubuque was named in honor of Julien Dubuque, a French-Canadian trader who got permission from the Indians to dig lead there, and elsewhere, on a tract of 140,000 acres of land which the redskins gave him. The grant was confirmed by Baron Carondelet, and a title by the French king was issued.
