LESSON I.

HESE Manuals are intended to contain a five years' course of instruction on the English Prayer Book for Pupil Teachers. They will, therefore, advance in difficulty as the Pupil Teachers advance in age.

We cannot do better than take for our guidance the Catechism with which our Church has provided us. In each succeeding year we shall find new and deeper lessons in this Catechism. With each year's study of the Catechism we shall connect some portion of the Prayer Book, and so make the text of the Catechism a thread on which we may hang all we have to say about the Prayer Book.

In this first Manual, intended for Pupil Teachers in the fourteenth year of their age, we shall go rapidly through the first portion of the Catechism, which contains the Creed, the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer; and in connexion with the Lord's Prayer we shall go on to explain the Order for Morning and Evening Prayer in the Prayer Book.

As we shall have to go over this earlier portion of the Catechism more carefully in future years, it will be enough now to notice shortly why the Catechism fixes your attention on the Creed, the Ten Command
