THE portion of the Students' Manual contained in this part may bu regarded as in some respects the most important part of the History of the Church of England. It gives an account of those momentous changes in the relations of the Church of England to that of Rome which we are in the habit of describing as the Reformation, and it exhibits the long struggle of the Church, after its freedom from Rome, against hostile assaults from the opposite quarter. It leaves the Church in a state of feebleness and inactivity, brought about by the accession of a Government not altogether favourable to its interests, and by the silencing of the voice of its Synods. The concluding Part of the Manual will exhibit its gradual recovery from these depressing influences, and its wonderful expansion and renewed life in the present century.
