We cannot more appropriately

without great satisfaction and delight. close our extended notice of this valuable work, than by quoting the concluding remarks of the author :

"An union with our brethren of all denominations, and a prosperity, however unbounded, which are purchased at the expense of revealed truth and christian fidelity, should hold out no attractions for us. The bond of the one would prove a rope of sand, an association equally displeasing to God, and injurious to his people; and the brightness of the other, but the glow of the ignis fatuus, which

Leads to bewilder, and dazzles to blind!"

Light is spreading. Truth is taking hold on the hearts of men. Darkness is receding. The spirit of enquiry is abroad. Revelation is assuming its rightful authority. Every religious pretension must, ere long, be brought to this test. Our triumph is not distant; until it come, let every man acquit himself with a firmness and intrepidity, worthy of the glorious cause it is our honour to defend !"

RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE.

Home Missionary Society for the Counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridge, and Huntingdon.

September 26th, 1844, the above Society held their Annual Meeting at Warboys, Hunts.

The Committee met at the Vestry of the Baptist Chapel, to transact the business of the Society. Mr. Turner, of London, was called to the Chair.

The applications to the fund were of an interesting character, and reported that a great amount of good had been accomplished during the past year, in the conversion of sinners and in the edification of saints. Many dark and benighted villages of the above counties are receiving the light of the glorious gospel; and great moral and lasting changes are being accomplished, Indeed, in very many parts, the wilderness has blossomed and become fruitful.

In addition to the stations already occupied in Suffolk and Norfolk, TWO others are undertaken, and two more of still equal importance have made pressing applications for assistance.

Twenty-one sums were voted to ministers, to help them in their village labours, in which many of them are very extensively and indefatigably employed,

The funds of the society were unequal to all these pressing demands, but the committee undertook and voted sums to FOUR stations, and to twentyone ministers, to aid them in their village labours; and glad will they be to enlarge their field of labour when the funds of the society will enable them to do so.

In the evening a Public Meeting was held. Brother Irish, the minister of the place, presided. After a brother had implored the divine blessing, the chairman stated the nature and objects of the meeting, and commented upon the great advantages that had already appeared from united cooperation, urging the claims of this society on the grounds of truth and usefulness.

Brother Cooper read the report of the society for the past year, which contains very much interesting and important matter.

Resolutions were then moved and seconded by brethren Collins, Muncey, Field, Cooper, Baldwin, Barnes, Whiting, Smith and Thornley.

A resolution was also put, and carried by acclamation, expressive of the thanks of the meeting, for the kind services rendered by the ladies, and for the very handsome manner in which they had provided and gratuitously supplied the ministers and company with tea.

After these resolutions had been put, and unanimously passed, Mr. Thomas Ekins, of Warboys, (the old and tried friend of the cause, and of God and truth, and who has for so many years so liberally and kindly treated all the servants of Jesus Christ, who have passed that way--that his house has justly been called the Pilgrims' Lodge for the Ministers of the Gospel,') then rose and addressed the meeting, expressing the high gratification he felt in the committee room in the business, and in the house of God throughout the service of the evening, most warmly commending this excellent society to the sympathy and support of his friends, on the ground of its principles, and the benefit it had been instrumental in conferring on others. Mr. Ekins then, in a most interesting manner, gave an outline of the rise and progress of the cause of God at Warboys, shewing how, from small beginnings, the Lord accomplishes the great purposes of his grace, and encouraged the members of the committee to aim at, and expect, under God's blessing, great things. The meeting appeared affected and delighted with this unexpected, excellent, and welcome address.

The chairman then made a few closing remarks, the doxology was sung, and the meeting closed by prayer.

The meetings throughout were both interesting and harmonious. collection amounted to £12. Os. Od.

The

On the previous Tuesday, meetings were held in the Baptist Chapel, Cottenham, in aid of the same object. Mr. Sutton presided. These meetings, although not so well attended as in previous years, were very united, and truly interesting.

The following brethren addressed the meeting: Barnes, of Glemsford— Thornley, of Swaversay-Bailey, of Cambridge-Whiting, of Needingworth-Irish, of Warboys-Cooper, of Wattisham-Nottage, of Cottenham-Bray, of Ditto-Baldwin, of Elsworth-Isaac, of Over-and Collins, of Grundisburgh.

The report will shortly be in circulation.
