The ORDER for
Let the MINISTER standing up, (soon after the Congregation are assembled, and it'hath been notified by the Sound of a little
Bell, or any other convenient IVay to call to Attention,) begin 9. by reading, audibly and distinctly; as many of the following - Sentences, as He shall think proper.
HE Lord our God is gracious and merciful, long
keeping Mercy for thousands, forgiving Iniquity, Transgression and Sin, and will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the Iniquity of the Fathers upon the Children, and upon the Children's Children, unto the third and fourth Generation : 'and He will not turn away his Face from you, if you return unto Him. (Exod. xxxiv. 6, 7,-2 Chron. XXX. 9.).
The Righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the Day of his Tranfgrefsion : as for the Wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby, in the Day that he turnesh from his Wickedness ; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his Righteousness in the Day that he finneth. When I shall say to the Righteous, that he shall surely live : if he trust to his own Righteousness, and commit Iniquity ; all his Righteousness shall not be remembered ; but for his Iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. (Ezek. xxxiii. II, 12, 13.)
Let the wicked forsake his Way, and the unrighteous Man his Thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have Mercy upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. (Ifai. lv. 7.)
WHEREWITH shall we come before the Lord, and bow ourselves before the most high God ? He hath shewed thee, O Man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of
thee, but to do justly, to love Mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah vi: 6, 8.)
Wash ye, make ye clean, put away, the Evil of your Doings from before mine Eyes, cease to do Exil, learn to do well, seek Judgement; relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, piead for the Widow. Come now and let us reafon together, faith the Lord, though your Sins be as Scarlet, they shall be as white as Snow; though they be red like Crimson, they shall be as Wool. (Ijai. i. 16, 17, 18.)
Let us take diligent heed to do the Commandments and the Laws of God, to love the Lord our God, to walk in all his Ways, to keep his Statutes, to cleave unto him, and to ferve him with all our Heart and with all our Soul. (Folpya
Now therefore in the Sight of the Congregation of the Lord, and in the Audience of our God, keep and seek for all the Commandments of the Lord your God; and know you the God of your Fathers, and serve him with a perfect Heart, and with a willing Mind; for the Lord searcheth all Hearts, aud understandeth all the Imaginations of the Thoughts : if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever, (1 Chron. xxi. 8, 9.)
WILL God indeed dwell on the Earth? behold the Heaven; and Heaven of Heavens cannot contain Thee, Yet have Thou respect unto the Prayers of thy Servants, and to their Supplications, O Lord our God, to hearken unto the Prayer, which thy Servants pray unto Thee, this Day. (1 Kings viii. 27, 28.)
God is a Spirit, and they that worship him, muft worThip him in Spirit and in Truth. And now is the Hour, when the true Worshippers fhall worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship him. (John iv. 23, 24.) [On every Sonday, He fhall also read the following Verses
from Ifai. Iviii. 13; 14. after any of the former, but not on ether Days.
F thou turn away thy Foot from the Sabbath, from
doing thy Pleasure on my holy Day, and call the Sabbath a Delight, the holy of the Lord, honorable, and
fhalt honorhim, not doing thine own Ways, nor finding thine own Pleasure, nor speaking thine' own Words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, and I will cause thee to ride upon the high Places of the Earth, and feed thee with the Heritage of Jacob thy Father ; for the Mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.]
Then All standing up, He shall say,
We are now assembled together to offer up our united Praises and Supplications to almighty God, our heavenly Father, our Creator, Preserver, and continual Bene
factor, to humble ourselves before Him for our manifold : Transgressions, to render Thanks to Him for the innumerable Mercies we have each of us received at his Hands, to acknowledge (as is justly due) his glorious Perfections, his infinite Power and Goodness, with our constant Depen' dence upon Him, to hear and attend to his holy Word, [and Commandments,] and to ask from Him those Blessings, which are requisite and necessary, as well for the Body as the Soul. And although the Remembrance of our Ingratitude and multiplied Offences might justly deject us, and make us afhamed to lift up our Eyes to the Place where his Holiness dwelleth; yet such is his great Mercy in Chrift Jesus, that He not only suffereth, but even inviteth Sinners to approach unto him; He despiseth not the Sighing of a contrite Heart, nor the Defire of such as are truly penitent; and hath graciously assured us in his facred Scriptures of Truth, that althougb He that covereth his Sins ihall not prosper, yet Whoso confesseth and forsakech them, shall find Mercy and Forgiveness of the same. Wherefore I entreat You, as many as are here present, to accompany nie with a pure Heart and humble Voice, unto the Throne of the heavenly Grace, and with a stedfast Resolution to. forsake all your Iniquities and to reform your Lives, saying
The General CONFESSION, to be repeated after the Mini
fier, by the whole Congregation, All kneeling. LORD God Almighty, and most merciful Father,
We acknowledge and confess our manifold Sins and Wickedness, that render us unworthy of thy Goodness and Mercy towards us. We have erred and strayed from thy holy Ways; we have followed too much the evil Desires and Inclinations of our own Hearts; we have offended against many of thy righteous Laws; we have left undone many Duties which we ought to have done, and we have done mary Things which we ought not to have done, and justly deserve to be punished for our Transgressions. But blessed be thy Name, with Thee there is Forgiveness upon Repentance and Amendment of Life. We would therefore now humble ourselves before Thee, and be fincerely sorry for all our Misdoings; and we earnestly implore thy Pardon and Acceptance of us, according to the Riches of thy Grace in Jesus Christ our Lord. O God of Mercy, have Mercy upon us miserable Offenders; enter not into strict Judgement with us, but forgive us all that is past. And grant that this thy Grace and Forbearance may work in us true Repentance, and engage us to lead a righteous and holy Life for the Time to come. May thy good Spirit guide us into the Way of Truth, and graciously assist our fincere Purposes of Amendment; purifie our Minds from every evil and corrupt Desire, that being delivered from the Bondage of Corruption, We may be admitted into the glorious Liberty of the Children of God, and henceforth denying all Ungodliness and worldly Lusts, may walk worthy of our Chriftian Profession, that at length we may obtain everlasting Life, through Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.
Min. As I live, faith the Lord, I have no Pleasure in the Death of the Wicked, but that he turn from his Ways and live. (Ezek. xxxiii. 11.)
Peop. To the Lord our God belong Mercies and Forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. (Dan. ix. 9.)
M. Teturn, ye backsliding Children, and I will heal your Backilidings.
P. Behold, We come unto Thee, for Thou art the Lord our God. (Jerem. iii. 22.)
M. God so loved the World, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whuloever believeth in Him should not perish, but have evedaiting Life (John iii
. 16.) P. Lord, We believe, help Thou our Unbelief. (Mark
M. Let us pray:
LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who art
good and ready to forgive, and plenteous in Mercy to All that call upon Thee in Truth, and haft fent thy Son Jefus Christ into the World, to redeem us from Ini. quity, and to declare the Remiflion of Sins unto them that fincerely repent ; grant us, We humbly beseech Thee, a well-grounded Hope of thy Pardon and Reconciliation, by enabling us to do thy Will in all Things. May we break off our Sins by Righteousness, and fortake them by a true Repentance: and may we forgive All those who have any ways offended or injured Us, as entirely and heartily as We ourselves do defire or expect Forgiveness ; that thus following thy Commandments, O God, these Things may please Thee which We do at this present, and the rest of our Life here. after may be pure and holy, so that at the last we may come to thine eternal Joy, through the Mediation of Jesus Christ, thine only Son, our Lord. Amen,
9 Then All standing up, the Minister Mall say, HEN the wicked Man turneth away from his
Wickedness which he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his Soul alive. (Ezek. xviii. 27.)
Peop. In this the Children of God are manifest, and the Children of the Devil ; whosoever doeth not Righteousness, is not of God; neither he that loveth not his Brother. (I John iii. 10.)
M. Be ye therefore kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ hath forgiven you. (Ephef iv. 32.)
P, One Man beareth Hatred against another, and doth he seek Pardon of the Lord? He theweth no Mercy to a
