Heaven, and to reftrain the Floods thereof, that there be not such a sweeping Rain as fhall leave us no Food. Caufe thy Mercy speedily to fhine forth; and may the Vifitations of thy Goodness come upon Us, as refreshing as the Light of the Morning, when the Sun rifeth, even a Morning without Clouds; or as the tender Grafs fpringing out of the Earth, by clear Shining after Rain. And although Thou now hideft thy Face from Us, yet graciously appear for our Comfort, and fend Us fuch kind and favorable Weather, as that in due Season We may receive the Fruits of the Earth, and learn both by thy Chaftisement to amend our Lives, and from thy Clemency to fhew forth thy Praife, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

¶In the Time of Dearth or Famine.

MOST gracious God, who turneft a fruitful Land into Barrennefs, for the Iniquity of them that dwell therein; with all Humility of Soul, We proftrate ourselves at thy Footstool, acknowledging that Thou art righteous in all thy Judgments, and that We, unthankful and difobedient, as we have been, amidft our former Abundance, do justly deserve to eat our Bread by Weight and with Care, and to drink Water by Measure and with Aftonishment Yet deal not with us, We befeech Thee, after our Sins, neither reward us according to our Iniquities, but gracioufly look upon the Afflictions of thy Servants; have Mercy upon us, and grant that our prefent Dearth and Scarcity may through thy Goodness be turned into Cheapnefs and Plenty, that Wc, receiving the Fruits of thy bountiful Liberality, may use the fame to thy Glory, the Relief of thofe that are in Want, and to our own Comfort and Happinefs, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

¶ In the Time of any common Plague or Sickness.

OST wife and powerful Lord our God, under an awful Senfe of thine awakening Judgements, We would bow before thy Throne, and humble ourfelves under thy mighty Hand, which in fo aftonishing a Manner is ftretched out against us. In the Midft of Life we are in Death; the Grave hath enlarged itfelf, and opened it's Mouth beyond

yond Meafure, and our Glory, Multitude and Pomp defcend into it: Of whom may We feek for Succor but of Thee, O Lord, who for our Sins art juftly displeased? Yet,

God most holy, O Lord moft mighty, O holy and merCiful Savior, correct us not in Anger, left Thou bring us to Nothing; but, of thine abundant Compaffion, remove this grievous Sicknefs and Mortality, with which our Houses are vifited, and take away thy Plague from us, that We be not confumed by the Stroke of thy heavy Hand. Pardon, We befeech Thee, our own crying Sins, and thofe of the whole Nation, which have drawn down thy heavy Displeasure upon Us; teach Us by thefe thy Chaftifements to reform our Tempers and Conduct; and grant that the Lives which Thou haft hitherto spared, may be devoted to thy Fear, that thy Servants being prepared for all Events, may, whether we live, live unto the Lord, or whether we die, may die unto the Lord; and out of thine infinite Goodness have Mercy upon us, that living or dying We may be Thine, through the [Merits and] Mediation of Jefus Chrift thine only Son our Lord. GRACIOUS God, who, in thy great Bounty to Mankind, haft given them the Beasts of the Field for their Provifion and Nourishment; continue to us, We humbly befeech Thee, this Bleffing, and fuffer us not to be reduced to Scarcity and Diftrefs by the contagious Distemper, which [hath raged, and] yet rages, among the Cattle in many Parts of this Kingdom. In this and all other thy Difpenfations towards Us, We fee and adore the Juftice of thy Providence, and do with penitent Hearts confefs, that our manifold Iniquities have defervedly provoked thine Anger and Indignation against us. But We earnestly entreat; Thee, O almighty Father, in this our calamitous State to look down upon us with an Eye of Pity and Compaffion; and, if it be thy bleffed Will, to forbid the fpreading of this fore Vifitation, and in thy good Time to remove it from all the Inhabitants of this Land, for the Sake of thy Mercies in Chrift Jefus, our only Savior and Redeemer. On Occafion of any violent Storm or Tempest..

MOST great and glorious Lord our God, Thou art cloathed with almighty Power, and girdeft thyfelf with irrefiftible Strength; with Thee there is terrible Majefty; thy Way is in the Whirlwind, and in the Storm, and the Clouds are the Duft of thy Feet; Thou commandeft the Winds and the Seas, and they obey Thee; the Mountains fake at thy Prefence, the Rocks tremble before Thee, yea, the Earth, and all that dwell therein: We, poor feeble Duft and Afhes, whom Thou canst scatter with the Breath of thy Mouth, defire with the deepest Humility, and in a most adoring Senfe of thy Greatnefs, to throw ourselves at the Footftool of thy Throne; poffefs our Hearts, O God, with an holy Fear and Reverence of Thee, may we stand in Awe of thy Judgements; and by these awakening Calls of thy Providence, which are given us in the raging Tempefts we feel, [or have felt,] teach us to confider our Ways, to bewail, our paft Offences, and to renew our Purposes of Repentance and Amendment of Life. Abate the ftormy Winds, and compofe the troubled Waves of the Sea, that Thofe that are thereon may be fafe under thy powerful Protection, and that thy Servants every where may be defended from the Dangers which threaten them. Give us Grace, We befeech Thee, to become wifer and better by the Rebukes of thy Rod, and amidst all the Changes and Commotions of this World, grant that by a patient Continuance in well-doing, our Hearts may be fo fixed, trufting in the Lord, that We may never be afraid of any Evil; but with holy and unfhaken, Confidence be looking for thy Mercy unto eternal Life, in that City, of which Thou, Ó God, art the Builder and Maker, the Foundations whereof never fhall be fhaken. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for thy Goodness-Sake in Christ Jesus our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

On Occafion of an Earthquake.

LORD our God, We defire with the utmost Reve rence to proftrate our Souls before Thee, confeffing that Thou art a great God, mighty and terrible; Thou remavet the Mountains, and overturneft them in thine An-

ger, Thou fakeft the Earth out of her Place, and makest the Pillars thereof to tremble. We befeech Thee, O Lord," to awaken our Attention, duly to confider and hear the Voice of thy amazing Judgements, and to learn the Inftructions they have a tendency to convey may We every one of us examine our own Hearts, fee where we have done Jniquity, and fincerely refolve to do so no more: Suffer is not, as foon as our present Confternation is over, to forget our Deliverance, or to grow vain and prefumptuous, left a worfe Thing fhould befall us. We acknowledge it is of thy Goodness, O God, that we were not utterly confumed, and that we were not swallowed up quick, by the late dreadful Earthquake. O may a Senfe of thy many wonderful Préfervations of us continually abide upon our Hearts, and produce fuch a godly Care and Watchfulness in our Conduct, that no Difafter in Life may ever furprize us; that Death itself, at what time and in what manner foeverit cometh, may not find us unprepared; and that at length We may fafely arrive at that Kingdom, which can never be. moved; for the Sake of thy Mercy in Chrift Jefus, our worthy Mediator and Redeemer. In the Time of War and Tumults.

ALMIGHTY God, King of all Kings, and Governor of all Things, whofe Power no Creature is able to refift, to whom it belongeth juftly to punish Sinners, and to be merciful to them that truly repent; fave and deliver Us, We befeech Thee, from the Hands of our Enemies; let not this our Country be ever fubject to Tribute, for given up to Strangers; and let not them that hate us prevail against us, or obtain the Rule over us: abate, O Lord, their Pride, affwage their Malice, difappoint all their Councils, and make their Devices against us of none effect, and may all their Schemes and Enterprizes be as the untimely Birth, or as Grafs upon the Houfe-top, which withereth afore it groweth up. We humbly intreat thy Favor and Protection; do Thou, Lord, undertake for us; go forth with our Fleets and Armies, and teach all our Soldiers to act the Part that becometh them; cover their Heads in the Day of Battle, gird them with ftrength of War, and crown them with Victory and Songs of Tri

A more particular PRAYER for a fick Perfon.

FATHER of Mercies, and God of all Comfort, our

only Hope in time of Need, We humbly implore thy Mercy towards this thy fick Servant, lying under thine afficting Hand, in great Weakness of Body. Vifit him, Ố Lord with thy Salvation, and deliver him from that bodily Pain and Weakness under which he now labors. [Blefs the Means made ufe of for his Recovery.] And if it be agreea ble to the divine Will, prolong his Days upon Earth, that he may live the Refidue of his Life in thy Fear, and to thy Glory, by ferving Thee faithfully, and doing good in his Generation. Sanctifie, We befeech Thee, this thy fatherly Correction to him; that the Senfe of his Weakness may add Strength to his Faith, and Seriousness to his Repentance. Give him Comfort and fure Confidence in Thee, that he may patiently and entirely fubmit to thy bleffed Will in all Things; defend him from the Suggestions of Satan, and keep him in continual Peace and Safety: and if Thou haft in thy Wisdom determined to remove him hence, give him Grace fo to take thy Vifitation, that after this painful Life ended, he may dwell with Thee in Life everlafting, through Jefus Chrift our merciful Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

A Prayer for a fick Perfon, when there appeareth Small Hope of Recovery.
