20. Thy Way, O God, is holy: who is fo great a God, as our God?

21. Thou art the God that doeth Wonders, and haft declared thy Power among the People.

22. Thou with thine Arm redeemed thy People, even the Sons of Jacob and Jofeph.

23. The Waters faw Thee, O God, the Waters faw Thee and were afraid; the Depths alfo were troubled: the Clouds poured out Water, the Air thundered, and thine Arrows went abroad.

24. The Voice of thy Thunder was heard in the Heavens; the Lightning fhone upon the Ground, the Earth was moved, and shook withal.

25. Thy Way is in the Sea, and thy Paths in the great Waters, and thy Footfteps are not known.

26. Thou leddeft thy People like a Flock, by the Hand of Mofes and Aaron. THOU DIDST divide the Sea by thy Power, Thou brakeft the Heads of the Dragons of the Waters. (P. lxxiv.)

27, Thou fmoteft the Heads of Leviathan in Pieces, and gaveft him to be Meat for the People in the Wildernefs: Thou broughteft out Fountains and Waters out of the hard Rocks; Thou driedft up mighty Rivers.

28. The Day is thine, and the Night alfo is thine; Thou haft prepared the Light and the Sun.

29. Thou haft fet all the Borders of the Earth; Thou haft made Summer and Winter.

30. O THE DEPTH of the Riches both of the Wifdom and Knowledge of God! how unfearchable are his Judgements, and his Ways paft finding out! (Róm. xi. 33.)

31. For Who hath known the Mind of the Lord, or who hath been his Counsellor?

32. For of Him, and through Him, and to Him are all Things; to Whom be Glory for ever. Amen.

HEAR

ΗΥΜΝ ΧΧΧ.

Evening.

TEAR MY LAW, O my People; incline your Ears unto the Words of my Mouth: I will open my Mouth in a Parable; I will declare dark Sentences of old." (Pf. lxxviii.)

2. Which

2. Which we have heard and known, and such as our Fathers have told us.

3. We will not hide them from the Children of the Generations to come; but fhew the Honor of the Lord, his mighty and wonderful Works that He hath done.

4. He made a Covenant with Jacob, and gave Ifrael a Law, which He commanded our Forefathers to teach their Children; that their Pofterity might know it, and the Children which were yet unborn:

5. To the Intent, that when they came up, they might fhew their Children the fame; that they might put their Truft in God, and not forget the Works of God, but keep his Commandments:

6. And might not be as their Forefathers, a faithlefs and ftubborn Generation, a Generation that fet not their Hearts aright, and whose Spirit was not ftedfast unto God.

7. Like as the Children of Ephraim, who being armed, and carrying Bows, turned themselves back in the Day of Battle.

8. They kept not the Covenant of God, and would not walk in his Law; but forgat what He had done, and the wonderful Works that He had shewed for them.

9. Marvelous Things did He in the Sight of their Forefathers in the Land of Egypt, even in the Field of Zoan: He divided the Sca, and let them go through; He made the Waters to ftand on an Heap.

10. In the Day-time alfo He led them with a Cloud; and all the Night through with a Light of Fire.

11. He clave the hard Rocks in the Wilderness, and gave them Drink thereof, as it had been out of the great Depth: He brought Waters out of the ftony Rock, so that it gushed out like the Rivers.

12. Yet for all this they finned more against Him, and provoked the moft High in the Wilderness.

13. They tempted God in their Hearts, and required Meat for their Luft: They spake against God alfo, faying Shall God furnish a Table in the Wilderness?

14. "He fmote the ftony Rock indeed, that the Water "gushed out, and the Stream flowed withal; but can He give Bread alfo, or provide Flesh for his People?"

15. Therefore when the Lord heard this, He was wroth: So a Fire was kindled against Jacob, and there came up heavy Displeasure against Ifrael.

16. Be

16. Because they believed not in God, and put not their Truft in his Help; though He commanded the Clouds above, and opened the Doors of Heaven.

17. He rained down Manna alfo upon them for to eat, and gave them Food from Heaven: fo Man did eat Angel's Food, for He tent them Meat enough.

18. He caufed the Eaft Wind to blow under Heaven; and through his Power He brought in the South-Weft Wind.

19. He rained Flesh upon them as thick as Duft, and feathered Fowls like as the Sand of the Sea; He let it fall among their Tents, even round about their Habitation.

20. So, they did eat and were filed, for He gave them their own Defire; they were not difappointed of their Luft.

21. But while the Meat was yet in their Mouths, the heavy Wrath of God came upon them, and flew the fattest of them, yea, and fmote down the chofen Men that were in Ifrael.

22. But for all this they finned yet more, and believed not his wond'rous Works: therefore their Days did He confume in Vanity, and their Years in Trouble.

23. When He flew them, they fought Him, and turned them early, and enquired after God; and they remembered that God was their Strength, and that the high God was their Redeemer.

24. Nevertheless they did but flatter Him with their Mouths, and diffembled unto Him with their Tongues; for their Heart was not whole with Him, neither continued they ftedfaft in his Covenant.

25. But He was fo merciful, that He forgave their Mifdeeds, and deftroyed them not; yea, many a time turned He his Wrath away, and would not fuffer his whole Difpleasure to arife.

26. For He confidered that they were but Flesh, and that they were even a Wind that paffe.h away, and cometh not again.

27. Many a Time did they provoke Him in the Wildernefs, and grieved Him in the Defer; yea, they turned back and tempted God, and moved the holy One of Ifrael.

28. hey thought not of his Hand, and of the Day, when He delivered them from the Handle Eneny;

29. How

29. How He had wrought his Miracles in Egypt, and his Wonders in the Field of Zean; and had turned their Waters into Blood, fo that they might not drink of the Rivers."

30. He fent Lice among them, which devoured them up; and Frogs to deftroy them: He gave their Fruit untó the Caterpillar, and their Labor unto the Grafshopper:

31. He deftroyed their Vines with Hail ones, and their Flocks with hot Thunder-bolts: He cait upon them the Furioufnefs of his Wrath, Anger, Difpleasure, and Trouble, and fent evil Angels among them:

32. He made a Way to his Indignation, and spared not their Soul from Death, bur gave their Life over to the Peftilence; and fmote all the first-born in Egypt;' the most principal and mightiest in the Dwellings of Ham.

33. But as for his own People, He led them forth like Sheep, and guided them in the Wildernets like a Flock : He brought them out fafely, fo that they fhould not fear; and overwhelmed their Enemies with the Sea.

at

34. And He brought them within the Borders of his Sanctuary, even to his Mountain, which He purchafed with his right Hand.

35. He caft out the Heathen alfo before them; caufed their Land to be divided among them for an Heritage, and made the Tribes of Ifrael to dwell in their Tents.

36. Yet they tempted and difpleafed the most high God, and kept not his Teftimonies, but turned their Backs, and fell away like their Forefathers, ftarting afide like a deceitful Bow:

37. For they grieved Him with their Hill-altars, and provoked Him to Difpleasure with their Images

38. When God heard this, He was wroth, and took fore Displeasure at Ifrael; fo that He forfook the Tabernacle in Sil, even the Tent that He had pitched among Men.

[ocr errors]

39. He delivered their Power into Captivity, and their Glory into the Enemies Hand: He gave his People over alfo unto the Sword, and was wroth with his Inheritance:

40. The Fire confumed their young Men, and their Maidens were not given to Marriage; their Priefts were flain with the Sword, and there were no Widows to make Lamentation.

03

41. Then

41. Then the Lord awaked as one out of Sleep, and like a mighty Man refreshed with Wine; He fmote his Enemies in the hinder Parts, and put them to a perpetual Shame.

42. Moreover, He refused the Tabernacle of Jofeph, and chose not the Tribe of Ephraim; but chofe the Tribe of Judah, even the Hill of Sion which He loved;

43. And there He built his Temple on high, and laid the Foundation of it like the Earth, which He hath established for ever.

44. He chofe David alfo his Servant, and took him away from the Sheep-folds; as he was following the Ewes great with young. He took him, that he might feed Jacob his People, and Ifrael his Inheritance.

45. So he fed them with a faithful and true Heart, and ruled them prudently with all his Power.

46. SALVATION to our God, which fitteth upon the Throne, and to the Lamb. (Rev. vii. 10.)

47. AMEN. Bleffing, and Glory, and Wifdom, and Thanksgiving, and Honor, and Power, and Might be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

HYMN XXXI.

Morning.

IVE EAR, O thou Shepherd of Ifrael, Thou that leadeft Jofeph like a Sheep; fhew thyfelf alfo, Thou that fittest upon the Cherubims. (Pf. lxxx.) 2. Before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manaffes, ftir up thy Strength, and come and help us.

3. Turn us again, O God; fhew us the Light of thy Countenance, and we fhall be faved.

4. O Lord God of Hofts, how long wilt Thou be angry with thy People that prayeth?

5. O REMEMBER not against us our former Iniquities, but have Mercy upon us, and that foon; for we are brought very low. (P. lxxix.)

6. Help us, O God of our Salvation, for the Glory of thy Name; O deliver us, and be merciful to our Sins, for thy Name's-fake.
