pleasing; being fruitful in every good work; and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Thus, heavenly Father, help us to glorify thee in our bodies and our spirits which are thine put thy fear within us, that we may not depart from thee; make us to go in the path of thy commandments, for therein is our desire. Give us understanding that we may keep thy law, yea that we may keep it with our whole heart. May we hear a word behind us saying, This is the way, walk ye in it.

Give us wisdom and grace to honour thee, by uprightness and fidelity in all our ways. Preserve us from unchristian tempers, and pursuits: may we exercise ourselves to have always a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men. May we be approved in thy sight as an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile, and be numbered among the true followers of the Lamb of God, who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Amen.

HYMN.

Lord plant a principle within
Of jealous, godly fear ;

A sensibility of sin,

And grief to find it near.

Give us the first approach to feel
Of pride, and vain desire;

To watch the wand'rings of the will,
And quench the kindling fire.

From thee that we no more may part,
No more thy goodness grieve,
The filial awe, the feeling heart,
The deep compunction give.

Quick as the apple of an eye,

O God, our conscience make ;
Awake its fears, when sin is nigh,
And keep them still awake.

O! may the least omission pain
Our well-instructed soul,
And drive us to that grace again,
Which makes the wounded whole.

PRAYER

For Tuesday Evening.

Great and glorious, gracious and merciful God and Father in Christ! look down from heaven, the habitation of thy holiness, and take notice of us weak and sinful creatures, worshipping this evening at thy footstool. Thou madest the heavens and the earth, and knowest all the works of thy hand. Our secret thoughts are naked to thine eye. Our hearts have too often forgotten thee. The

best of our services are too imperfect to deserve thy love, nor can all our obedience merit the pardon of one of our past transgressions. Let our crimes be washed away in the precious blood of thy dear Son, and in him accept us worthless sinners. Spare us according to the multitude of thy tender mercies, and let us not go down to the grave in an unpardoned and unholy state. Lengthen out our days, that we may secure our best interests and our eternal hope. Take out of our hearts every evil thought, and subdue every sinful inclination. Let thy blessed Spirit renew our souls, and make us holy in heart, in lips, and life. Give us strength against the assaults of temptation, that we may not offend our God, crucify afresh our Saviour, and make continual work for bitter repentance.

Choose our inheritance for us, O Lord, and make us content with the disposals of thy Providence in this present life. Let not our hearts idolize any thing on earth, but fix our affections on things above, where Christ is at thy right-hand. Bear us up under all the afflictions of life with faith and patience. Make us steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, trusting thy gracious promise, that we shall reap a joyful harvest if we faint not. Search, O God,

and try our hearts; discover to us wherein we have wandered from thee: give us true repentance, and lead us in the paths of holiness and peace. Fit us for death and judgment, and train us up daily by thy word and ordinances, by thy Spirit and grace, for the business and blessedness of thy kingdom in glory.

Protect us by thy providence, and guard us by thy grace through this night, nor suffer any evil imagination to defile or disquiet us. Whether we wake or sleep, live or die, let us be for ever thine!

We praise thee, O our God, for ease and health, and all the comforts of this day, and of our whole life. Above all, we bless thee for Jesus Christ, who came to purchase salvation for us by his blood; we bless thee that we were born and brought up under the sound of thy Gospel, and have been early acquainted with thy Holy Word, wherein is all our hope of everlasting life and glory. We beseech thee to perfume our unworthy prayers and praises with the rich incense of our Redeemer's intercession, for he is most worthy. And in his name and words let us further call upon thee, as Our Father which art in heaven," &c.

Meditation for Wednesday Morning.

THE SOUL DESIRING GOD AS ITS PORTION.

"Whom have I in heaven but thee."-Psalm lxxiii. 25.

There is, there is, an eternal an immutable Jehovah! He reigns on an exalted throne above, and the highest potentates of that shining world, are infinitely more inferior to him, than they are superior to the meanest insect on earth. God is there, and he is here; he surrounds all his creatures with immensity, and preserves them all by his influence. In him we live and move, and have our being; on him angels and worms are equally dependant; nor is there a motion in the material, or a thought in the intellectual world, of which he is not most intimately conscious. Behold him, O my soul, with reverence and love; for he is a most awful being, in whom unsearchable wisdom, and almighty power are joined with unerring justice, unspotted holiness, and invariable truth; but remember, he is also the most amiable. There is a beauty in all these perfections; and it is softened and sweetened by the overflowings of goodness and mercy; those rich and gentle streams which not only water Paradise, but visit the regions of guilt and darkness. Why do we
